The company was founded in 2012 from an idea of Mr. Zhao, and is based in the city of Guangzhou<\/a>, China, in good company with several other audio manufacturers. The factory covers an impressive 15,000 square meters, and the brand has always focused on developing high-end audio products at a competitive price. From five employees in its early days, Denafrips<\/a> now boasts more than 50 employees, and along this path the company has grown greatly in both digital and analog, expanding its product line from four to thirteen DACs with the addition over the years of preamplifiers, power amplifiers and headphone amplifiers, and all developed in-house. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

One of the things that Mr. Zhao prides himself on is the fact that he manufactures almost everything in-house, greatly differentiating Denafrips from the competition, especially in chief the total control of quality, cost, and manufacturing time, and this results in reduced costs reflected in the very competitive price of the products. In particular, the aluminum chassis are made in-house, from CNC machining of raw aluminum blocks to anodizing and final finishing, transformers, of course design, PCBs, assembly, and could not miss quality control. Only the electronic components, some printed circuit boards, some aesthetic details, wiring, remote controls, and packaging are not made in-house. The great resemblance to Musician products make the assumption that the company is the same, many people say, but we had no real feedback on this. We had tested on the channel the Pegasus<\/a>, very affordable R2R DAC, and if you see the video you will immediately see that there are many similarities, especially in chief the construction philosophy and the way the cabinet is made compared to this Puntus <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

That is how it is called on the manufacturer’s website, this DAC available in black or silver, and which is so directly derived from the Venus 12Th as to be virtually the same. On the power supply board the wording is just \u201cVenus,\u201d while the board of the actual DAC appears identical in photographs to that of the Venus 12Th. It is not at all clear to us why there are two \u201cballer\u201d versions, since the 13Th and 14Th do not exist. Unconquerable mysteries of Eastern logic. But then again, the Venus 15Th is a machine not only much more expensive, but completely different in hardware, physically larger and with more sophisticated technical solutions. But talk is 0, buying a Pontus 15Th today is like buying the Venus 12Th that until a few months ago cost over \u20ac4,000. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

In turn, the Pontus 12Th although the same in enclosure and thus in size, is quite different from this 15Th, much more accurate low noise clock in the new version, more and higher capacitance polypropylene capacitors, improved R2R chain with very low tolerance resistors (they claim 0.005%). Decoding is done through four sets of R2R networks , while all digital inputs are FIFO buffered and re-clocked minimizing the DAC’s dependence on the quality of the source device oscillator. The power supply of Pontus 15TH is an example of remarkable ingenuity. At the bottom is a box-in-box that \u201cfloats\u201d and totally isolates the DAC motherboard from the linear power supply, effectively preventing interference from affecting audio quality. Pontus 15Th is a fully balanced DAC, the advice is when possible to connect it to an equally fully balanced amplifier or preamplifier <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

R2R is perhaps the oldest of the processes used to convert a signal from digital to analog. It is based on a series of switches that can be opened or closed, controlled by a binary number, for example 1010. Each switch is connected to a very precise resistor network built with only two values: R and 2R. This network is like an electronic scale that \u201cweighs\u201d each bit according to its position: the leftmost (most significant) bits are worth more, the rightmost bits less. When a bit is on (i.e., worth 1), the corresponding switch connects a reference voltage, say 5 volts, to the circuit. When it is off (i.e., worth 0), it connects it to ground (0 volts). Through the organization of resistors, these voltages are combined precisely to form a DC output voltage that represents the original binary value. If the number, for example, is 1010, the R-2R network calculates the right combination of voltages, \u201cweighs\u201d each bit, and eventually provides a voltage proportional to that number. If the number increases, the output voltage increases. In this way, a continuous analog signal is obtained from a digital number. It all hinges on the precision of the resistors and how you add up the contributions of each bit. In our world there are at least 16 bits, but there can be 32, as we know, so this becomes a particularly complex issue. A very important clarification must be made with respect to bits; we were talking earlier about the leftmost, most significant bits, MSBs (Most Significant Bits) and the rightmost, LSBs (Low Significant Bits). <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The first ones characterize the signals larger in value, imagine a full orchestral, the others are those of the lower level details, down to the first bit, the least significant one, which is very close to the noise figure of the DAC, that is, the electronic noise of the semiconductors added to the various interferences. In that bit and in that value, however, there is not less music than in the right-hand bits, in the MSBs, but it is that bit that is most sensitive to the precision of the resistors representing it and to the structure of the DAC itself, in all respects, chassis, power supply, internal and external shielding, noise rejection. The signal has tens of times less value than the most significant bits, and it is likely to be \u201cgarbled,\u201d not interpreted as a signal. That is why R2Rs are more delicate DACs to make than standard ones, and they need a very robust and well-designed structure both in chief to the power supply and to the scheming that the thallium makes to the outside and between the various parts of the circuit. R2R was \u201cdusted off\u201d by the manufacturers basically because of a problem with the availability of DAC chips due to the problem with Asaki Kasei, which as we know stopped manufacturing for a few years due to a fire (it actually resumed about two years ago, in 2023) leaving many electronics manufacturers without the core of their devices. In fact, Denafrips never resorted to integrated chips and even the first DAC models, we are talking about ARES and PONTUS, were already R2R. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Pontus 15Th is neither half-size nor full-size, it has \u201codd\u201d dimensions, it is in fact 32cm wide, while it is 33cm deep and 11cm high including the pyramid feet, so it actually occupies an entire 43 shelf leaving some space. A front panel with a few buttons for input selection, phase, to include oversampling, muting, and mode button to enter set-up. All to the right, above the Pontus lettering some small holes that pass the infrared light for the remote control, not included. A row of very small, red LEDs above the buttons attest to the selected input on the left and the sample rate of the file being played on the right. Very rational and leaving very little room for imagination, in short. The top panel has a nice Denafrips inscription milled on the aluminum of the lid, while the rear panel houses the inputs, HDMI with dual PIN mapping, USB-B, optical, two AES\/EBU, two coaxial, one on BNC and one on PIN, the power tray, and the RCA and BNC outputs. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

An extremely convincing listening<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The Pontus 15th<\/span> reveals itself, from the very first listening, to be a device with a surprising and fascinating character. Although the parent company recommends a break-in period of about two weeks of continuous use to allow the DAC to express itself to its full potential, from the very first moments the quality and sonic signature of this DAC is evident. <\/p>

Its hallmark is undoubtedly clarity<\/span>, but it is important to specify that this is not artificial or overly bright. On the contrary, the Pontus 15th masterfully combines precision and naturalness, offering a sound rich in balance, weight, presence and poise<\/span>. This clarity is never edgy or analytical in a sterile way: on the contrary, it renders the music with great coherence and musicality. <\/p>

What is striking is its neutrality<\/span>, understood as timbral uniformity across the entire frequency spectrum, never favoring one range at the expense of another. The result is a full, enveloping<\/span> sound that manages to maintain its cohesion even in complex contexts such as symphonic music listening. In such cases, where the extent of the soundstage is wide and articulate, the Pontus succeeds in restoring a truly convincing sense of three-dimensional spatiality<\/span>. <\/p>

It proves to be extraordinarily composed<\/span>, even in the most dynamic passages or challenging tracks, never losing control, never becoming harsh or fatiguing, but always maintaining a stable, transparent and refined presentation.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Very few controls on the front panel, among them the OS\/NOS button, or Oversampling\/NonOversampling, by default the machine goes into oversampling and the led in this state is off, the button must be pressed to enable NOS<\/figcaption>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/figure>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

One curious detail to note concerns the oversampling (OS) mode of operation: this is not only enabled by default, but-counterintuitively-the LED signaling its inclusion is off. A design choice that seems to suggest an implicit confidence on the part of Denafrips engineers in the superiority of oversampling. In practice, we found no marked differences between OS and NOS (non-oversampling) modes, although the choice was not to be missed. The differences between the two available digital filters, however, are slightly more noticeable, but these are still subtle variations. Don’t expect radical upheavals in the character of the sound: these are more like nuances, which you may like more or less depending on personal preference or the musical material being played. But it’s not really all roses, the sound of Pontus 15, is not \u201ctoo\u201d soft, if there is an edge it can be heard, and even in structuring the voice within the soundstage, this is done without discount, almost aggressively, which if it can be an advantage for some, for others could be a slight jarring note. However, it must be said that, at the end of the day, we are analyzing and judging this DAC with outlier criteria, ideally juxtaposing it with much higher-priced products. If, on the other hand, we were to take its market positioning – under 2,500 euros – as a reference, the judgment could only be extremely positive. At this price, what it offers is, for all intents and purposes, extraordinary. The Pontus 15th is an impeccably constructed DAC, with an attention to detail that shines through from the very first glance, and a sound that is well beyond its price range. It is a product that, without exaggeration, can be considered a real bargain for those seeking audiophile performance without wanting (or being able) to deal with five-figure investments. As icing on the cake, it is available through an Italian distribution network, making after-sales service and support easier as well. What more could one wish for? Maybe just a quiet afternoon, a good system and a few favorite records to let yourself be won over. And maybe, in the end, decide that yes, the Pontus 15th really deserves to be in one’s audio chain. <\/p>
