This is true in all industries, not just audio. Just think of seemingly unassailable giants such as Kodak in photography or Nokia in telephony, which at the height of their development had no rivals, whose traces have now been lost. There has been no shortage of difficult times, junctures in which, however, the Glasgow-based company has been able to adapt. One above all was the advent of the digital age, which was fatal to many turntable manufacturers but was instead an opportunity for Linn to relaunch itself. Without stopping at the iconic Sondek LP12 turntable, it has been able to make some of the most musical reading systems of the &#8220;dark&#8221; era of 1990s CD players. With the arrival of the Internet, it was then one of the first companies to realize that the Net could be an ideal vehicle for high-quality music. Linn was even ahead of its time by being among the first to make devices that could interface with the network and distribute high-resolution music on its site. So, after more than fifty years, we can still experience a Linn device, and it is no coincidence that it is indeed a streamer. A Linn steamer, however, that goes beyond the box and is a universal component. All with the quality one would expect from a high-end product. We are talking about the Selekt DSM, a name that indeed evokes natural selection but in this case we could call it technological.         <\/p>\n<h2><b>Selekt DSM: selection and technological inclusiveness<\/b><b><i><\/i><\/b><\/h2>\n<p>The term selection sometimes takes on the meaning of exclusion, the Selekt DSM on the other hand appears to be a very inclusive component. DSM stands for <em>Digital Streaming and Music Player<\/em> but Linn actually allows expansion to different functions and leaves the door open for future upgrades. It comes in two versions, the <b>Classic Hub<\/b> and the <b>Edition Hub<\/b>. The former is the relatively basic version, while the latter has more refined aesthetic refinements, such as a billet aluminum top panel and glass front panel while on the other it is acrylic. To start with, it has analog inputs, one line and two phono (MM\/MC, respectively). Digital connections are two S\/PDIF, two TOSLINK, two RJ45 Exact Link for direct interfacing with compatible Linn components, plus a third classic Ethernet. Then there is an HDMI-ARC socket for a TV and USB-B input for use as a computer DAC. As the only analog output there is a dedicated pair for subwoofers. The basic Selekt DSM can only be used to interface with Linn Exakt loudspeakers, so one must plan to install output modules for all other situations. The additional modules are enclosed within their own enclosure, designed to fit quickly into three special slides provided on the back. For a configuration as a streamer-DAC, the analog module with one pair of XLR and one RCA output should be included. The concept of modularity is so far-reaching that the analog cartridge itself can be equipped with different DACs. The D\/A cards available are <b>Standard, Katalyst and Organik, <\/b>the latter also in mono configuration, so you would need two analog modules if you want the higher configuration. Two modules can be installed at the same time with Standard and Katalyst DACs, for example, but never in conjunction with the Organik, which must always be alone.          <\/p>\n<p><em>Power Amplifier<\/em> modules are also available that transform the Selekt DSM into an &#8220;all-in-one&#8221; smart-amp of 100 watts into four ohms and 50 watts into eight ohms. The DAC board must also be installed on this module, which can be chosen as in the previous cases. The most ambitious evolution may be the one that opens the door to multichannel. The compositions can be countless if we consider that the Selekt can also turn into an A\/V Receiver by installing multiple amplifier modules in the vertical slots and multiple HDMI inputs. You really are spoiled for choice and it is worth studying how you can best set up your Selekt DSM.    <\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"linn-selekt-dsm-speaker-out-modul\" src=\"https:\/\/audio-2g.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/elementor\/thumbs\/linn-selekt-dsm-speaker-out-modul-scaled-e1777529368809-rmr8bw93n0ty2nftuixqfjott6in2pfe8jsw6g2xvk.png\" alt=\"Amplifier module\"><figcaption>Two-channel Class D amplifier module<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h2><b>Modules&#8230;Modular<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>The device has a sophisticated and relatively complex construction. The frame is composed of &#8220;solid&#8221; aluminum parts, such as the eight-millimeter-thick bottom and the roughly five-millimeter-thick lid, assembled with the sides so that there are no bent sheets. Both are then machined internally to carve out housings and openings such as the lid louvers (which resonate slightly like the strings of a harp). All mechanical elements are solid, even the lids of the slots set up for the modules are heavy. The unit rests on three points, turned metal feet with a rubber damping O-ring.    <\/p>\n<p>Inside, the circuit has an extended motherboard, made of SMD components, which has multipole connectors of various types and in various locations. At one end is the multi-pin connector for insertion into the slide of the Selekt DSM, at the other the RCA and XLR outputs. Everything is included inside a folded sheet metal enclosure closed on one side by a smoked-colored plastic lid. It always exploits digital sigma-delta modulation but applies a subsequent PWM<em>(Pulse Width Modulation<\/em>) modulation to generate a digital data stream that is then reconstructed using an AFIR<em>(Analog-Finite-Impulse-Response<\/em>) filter formed by high-precision discrete-component current DAC elements. The Organik DAC module is implemented on two overlapping boards, and on the outermost one we find an ARTIX-7 FPGA from AMD that takes care of <em>signal-processing<\/em>. Much attention has been paid to the design of the circuit board tracks. Those for the clock, for example, follow paths that coincide with tolerances of fractions of a millimeter to avoid delays between different sections in the DAC. A streamer is controlled mainly through an app, which in our case is called precisely <strong>Linn App<\/strong> (Android and iOS). The app is intuitive and smooth, and I personally found it practical and also very fast in managing libraries from NAS over a home LAN. It is compatible with Tidal, Qobuz, Spotify Conenct, Roon, Airplay. USB-B connection with a PC does not involve ASIO drivers but only those of the operating system, reasoning that manageable files arrive in PCM at 192 kHz. DSD files up to DSD256 are streamed instead.     <\/p>\n<p>We also have physical controls such as the nice rotary control, a sort of <b>Linn&#8217;s magic eye <\/b>that vaguely brings us back to the tube radios of yesteryear. On the center front profile, however, there are six physical buttons that can be programmed with the functions that each person deems appropriate. <\/p>\n<p>The manageability of the device is very broad when one considers the ability to turn off functions that are of no interest, for example if one is not using the phono input or Bluetooth, and to reactivate them only when needed. One can then create one&#8217;s own Linn Account with which to manage the configuration of the Selekt and any other Linn equipment three hundred and sixty degrees via web browser. The reference chain included a Luxman L-509Z integrated amplifier and Bowers &amp; Wilkins 804 D3 speakers. <\/p>\n<p>In a digital landscape that has raised the quality bar significantly, thanks in part to products with aggressive price\/performance ratios, technical performance alone is a necessary but not sufficient parameter. Comparing many contemporary electronics can increasingly lead to close results, but in high-end, reliability, design continuity and, above all, sonic identity count. In this sense, the Selekt DSM plays with different cards: it is not an object of Asian provenance, of those that might be fleeting appearances in the system, but it is a device with a clearly recognizable philosophy, destined to leave its mark in the &#8220;lived history&#8221; of the enthusiast.  <\/p>\n<p>Indeed, memory brings me back to my personal old <strong>Karik<\/strong> and <strong>Numerik<\/strong> players, which even then were distinguished by a musicality uncommon in the digital landscape of the time and in many cases would still be relevant today. Today that language has been updated leaving the setting of a consistent and extremely reliable sound. <\/p>\n<p>The Selekt DSM is a machine that doesn&#8217;t just sound good, it asserts itself, becomes reference listen after listen because of the controlled, coherent way it sounds. The ability to maintain tonal correctness and control, even when signal complexity increases, is exemplary. Whether via network or as a USB DAC from a PC (in this case it stops at PCM 192kHz, which for my taste is well beyond the threshold of perceivable resolution), the Selekt DSM confirms a mastery of the digital domain that leaves no room for uncertainty. The feeling is one of realistic transparency rather than an overt &#8220;sonic signature&#8221;: the signal is not interpreted but faithfully translated.   <\/p>\n<p>On the micro-information level, the system performs exemplarily. The differences between Katalyst and Organik emerge mainly in the ability to define space and contrast. In the former, the presentation is already very solid, precise and free of smearing; in the latter, a different continuity of the musical flow and overall naturalness is perceived. The soundstage develops with width and, above all, stability: it is not a &#8220;wide&#8221; image, but a credible soundstage, with right proportions and a good sense of air between instruments. With the large orchestra, the stage opens with a wide and credible spatial reconstruction. The environment is legible in its planes. Acoustic instruments emerge with surgical precision but without analyticity. The <i>sustain<\/i> is natural, never artificially extended. This balance is the key point: the detail is there, but it is never separated from the musical context.        <\/p>\n<p>Dynamics is one of the most convincing points of the system: not so much for impact in a spectacular sense, but for the ability to move from low to high levels with ease. The bass is controlled, deep and well articulated. <\/p>\n<p>Functionally, the system confirms remarkable maturity: operational stability, flexible source management. The difference between the two DAC configurations is not so much a matter of &#8220;right or wrong&#8221; as of degree of finesse. The Katalyst already offers a fully credible level of performance with no obvious compromises. The Organik, is most appreciated after long listening sessions and is intended for those who want the best. The final choice, inevitably, shifts from the technical to the economic and listening philosophy. Consistent with its history in which evolution and innovation have given the brand longevity and identity. <\/p>\n<p>In the Selekt DSM we find Linn&#8217;s distinctive technological DNA, made up of non-trivial technological solutions aimed at sonic results. This streamer is a highly evolved, high-end audio component capable of meeting the needs of most enthusiasts and adapting to their wishes. From the possibility of becoming a preamplifier, to upgrading the conversion circuits to the option of amplifier modules that turn it into a high-end smart-amp or even an excellent Audio Video system. Exploited &#8220;normally&#8221; as a streamer or digital source in general, in itself it holds its own against the best current achievements. The former are over-sampling converters, which in a first step increase the sampling rate of the original signal by exploiting interpolation filters of different types <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">  <\/span>(FIR or IIR, minimum phase, linear phase, short or long, etc.), which in some implementations can be chosen by the user. In a subsequent step they then reduce the number of sample bits through Sigma-Delta modulators, filtering the resulting quantization noise out of the audible band (noise shaping). The above operations thus reduce the quantization (usually to 5 or 7 bits) and raise the sampling rate, even up to tens of megahertz. Obviously, there is no loss of information because the sampling theory is exploited, which allows this type of operation. The ultimate goal is to optimize the conversion, simplifying the conversion circuits compared to a 24-bit D\/A stage for example. Basically, a stream whose duty cycle (the time duration of the logic high or low, bit 1 or 0) is proportional to the analog signal, the concept employed, for example, in class-D amplifiers. This makes it possible to employ an even simpler and consequently accurate conversion stage, ideally with two individual parallel DACs\/switches, one for positive and one for negative branch, in the case of a differential signal. Then simply remove the high-frequency carrier, with a mild filter, and the conversion is done. Using a DAC circuit with a single switched-capacitor architecture would result in high RC values and high sensitivity to possible clock errors (resulting in jitter). Such a filter is modeled to counteract the shape of the noise, obtained after SDM modulation, inherently contained out-of-band in the digital stream. The Organik circuit was developed with discrete components ( apart from the inevitable signal processing section carried out by an FPGA ) but because of what has just been described it is evidently different from discrete DACs at R2-R architectures that employ more complex, high-bit-count logic. According to Linn, the combination makes the system immune to many of the problems that plague these discretized designs, where small errors in switching times or resistor values can generate distortion.
