And we start right at his genius. In addition to being one or perhaps the best living amplifier designer (opinion, for goodness sake, our own), with a full range of products(https://www.passlabs.com/) he has for many years already created an extremely active DIY community, which started back in February 1977 when he published in Audio Magazine the article “Construct A Class A Amplifier,” considered by many to be the founding act of modern audio DIY. The website passdiy.com collects all historical designs and was born in 2016(https://www.passdiy.com/). He is the only audio designer to do this, and with fervent determination. Just think of Amp Camp A an 8W single-stage power amplifier.

ACA, Nelson Pass’s Amp Camp A is a super-simple 8W DIY kit

that is the quintessential DIY audio project: simple, inexpensive, sonically satisfying, and with a huge community supporting it. It is called Amp Camp because in its first version it was made in Northern California on the Brock ranch in the presence of Nelson Pass, who also contributed operationally by helping participants as they built their kits. In his intentions Amp Camp was to be a simple amplifier, and for that reason powered by 24V computer switching, so that it would not complicate matters for those who were new to the field and that the “camp” participants could take it home working the same evening. Now the Camp Amp, or ACA is found in many different declinations, the most common one, this one: https://diyaudiostore.com/products/amp-camp-amp-complete

To many more complex versions, including this one. Which involves linear power supply. Hi Fi 2000 builds the cases, for those who want to try their hand, you can find them at this address. In short, for Nelson Pass to share his designs is a habit-and a brilliant marketing gimmick-though we think he does it for the passion of sharing his designs.

Aleph 5

Nelson Pass’s Aleph series was born in the early 1990s after the founding of Pass Labs (previously Pass was with Threshold), with the goal of creating stable, pure Class A amplifiers with a simple circuit and sounding as natural as possible. The first model was Aleph 0, introduced in 1992, a mono power amplifier of about 70 watts that introduced the single-ended MOSFET class A philosophy applied to modern high fidelity. In the following years came several models such as Aleph 1, Aleph 2, Aleph 3, and Aleph 4, all of which shared essential construction, strong thermal dissipation, and a very smooth and musical timbre that helped make the series a benchmark in HiFi. Perhaps the most famous was the Aleph 5 itself, introduced around 1997. About 60 watts per channel into 8 ohms-it is still considered one of the best compromises in the Aleph series for sonic balance, reliability, and circuit simplicity. When Pass made the Aleph’s technical documentation available to the DIY community, many builders got to work. The allure of replicating a legendary amplifier with one’s own hands, perhaps with select components and a quality chassis, was and is irresistible to anyone with a passion for audio electronics.

Original Aleph 5 was among the American designer’s best-selling endings

Aliexpress, an inexhaustible source, but not easy to choose

Precisely because of the popularization of Pass, a number of clones of both Aleph 3 and Aleph 5 have sprung up on the well-known Eastern site over the years. Basically what changes is the number of Mosfets, in the number of 4 total in the 3 and 6 in the 5, with a circuit board that is practically the same. What changes a lot is the quality of the components and the circuit board, as well as the type of Mosfet, the

circuit does in fact work with many different versions of IRFs, namely IRPF240, IRPF9240, IRPF150, and IRPF250, each of them has a different sound signature, the important thing is to select them-as indeed Pass did-and then proceed to listening. Which is not so easy, since to change all the Mosfets, one must first get them, select them, and then proceed with the assembly, which involves numerous operations that are not always easy. Danilo Rea heard the clone I keep at home (Giancarlo), which is a 4-channel Aleph 3( videohere ), equipped with IRPF150, so it seemed natural to me to go ahead with that choice.

One of the best boards you can buy on Aliexpress for the Pass Aleph 5 clone.

There was then to choose the filtering circuit. There are two schools here, on the one hand the CRC circuit, adopted by Pass and consisting of a first bank of capacitors, one or more resistors followed by other electrolytic capacitors, and the other, modern, with scotty diodes and then capacitance. However, the first one allows for a sweeter sound, and I felt it was more suited to Danilo’s taste, and virtually no noise floor, which brings out even more realistically the sound of the piano and voices. I adopted (Giancarlo) that solution but wasting no small amount of time in selecting the capacitor voltage. Some empirical theories state that the closer to the maximum voltage the better, after many trials 35VCA electrolytic capacitors were adopted, right at the limit, since that is the voltage at the ends of the end modules.

The rectification and filtering module of the CRC type as per the Nelson Pass scheme

The transformers were supplied by Piemme Elektra Audio, a company with which we have a very good relationship, those who want to try their hand at building not only Aleph Clone but any other DIY audio project (power supply, interstage, output, inductances) can refer to this link, while at this link you can buy the transformers for Aleph 5 and on request for Aleph 3. There is also a protection circuit that not only does the soft-start, which is operated by a button under the vu-meter, which is essential to prevent the 230V current from being cut off when the power is turned on, but also, by means of two 75-degree sensors, cuts off the power supply when that temperature is reached: for a class A it is very important. The Aleph 5 clone was listened to with Marten Parker Duo speakers (find the test here) and Linn Selekt DSM source with Organik Stereo dac (find the test here) using balanced connections. First impressions, already in the initial minutes after turning it on, were of absolute naturalness. There is something about the sonic character of the Aleph amplifiers that is difficult to describe precisely without resorting to metaphors, but it is an immediate perception, a kind of soft, continuous transparency, like looking through crystal-clear glass instead of slightly veiled air. With orchestral music, the clone demonstrated an ability to handle dynamic complexity rarely encountered at these levels. Orchestral crescendos developed without that feeling of compression that betrays amplifiers struggling at high currents. The Aleph, with its pure Class A, seems to have much greater dynamic reserves than the power rating would suggest. The midrange is where the Aleph perhaps expresses itself best. Voices have a rare presence and concreteness: a feeling of thickness and body that is neither inflated nor artificially colored, but “simply” the result of a particularly faithful transfer of the information contained in the recording. The timbre of the acoustic instruments, the pizzicato double basses, the piano violins, the fortepiano, everything had a credibility that kept one glued to the listening effortlessly.

Danilo Rea during one of the listening tests inside our hall.

The soundstage has great breadth and depth. The separation between instruments sharp without being artificially exaggerated, and the placement of elements in the stereophonic image stable and consistent even in the most complex passages. A two-stage only amplifier without global feedback is, almost by definition, the circuit with the least possible phase delay, and this results in a reconstruction of spatiality that many more elaborate circuits struggle to match. The low range is controlled and precise with great texture, that is, the ability to distinguish timbral differences between different grave instruments, to hear the electric bass string vibrate differently from the membrane of a double bass, to perceive the decay of grave sounds in their natural development over time. High frequencies are no less, extended and detailed without ever becoming aggressive: percussion cymbals retain their natural brilliance. In extended listening sessions, the characteristic that perhaps more than any other defines this amplifier emerged: the total absence of fatigue. After hours of listening, the music continues to be engaging and enjoyable. There is not that feeling of saturation that sometimes accompanies listening; Aleph seems to disappear, putting the music in the foreground and relegating the amplifier to the role of medium without intermediary. Building a clone of the Aleph 5 is a challenging project, requiring nontrivial technical skills and appropriate measurement equipment. It is not a project for beginners, nor is it something you complete in a weekend; in this case it took about 7 months. But it is also a project that amply repays the investment, both in terms of construction satisfaction and sonic result. The choice of the Monoblock HiFi2000 enclosure turned out to be excellent. The build quality of the chassis is on par with any high-end commercial device, the thermal management is more than adequate, and the final aesthetic appearance is that of a serious, understated instrument built to last for decades. There is something profoundly satisfying about the fact that one of the best amplifiers that can be built today, capable of competing with commercial equipment of much higher cost, has such an essential circuit. Nelson Pass demonstrated decades ago that complexity is not necessarily synonymous with quality, and that sometimes the most straightforward path is also the right one. This clone, made with respect for the original, only confirms this every time the music comes to life through it.

Technical characteristics:

Type: stereo power amplifier

4/8Ω power: 90/60W per channel

Finals: Mosfet

Frequency response: 2Hz-100kHz

Gain: 20dB

XLR/RCA input impedance: 25kΩ/10kΩ

Damping factors: 50

Distortion: 1% at 60W/8Ω

Power consumption: about 300W

Dimensions: 310X210X480

“The first watt is the most important watt.” This has always been Nelson Pass’s claim (you can read the story here).
