Luxman<\/a> was founded in 1925, and its history is one of the most fascinating and long-lived in the entire panorama of global high fidelity. Few brands, in fact, can boast such profound historical continuity, traversing nearly a century of technological evolution without ever losing a precise sonic and philosophical identity.To speak of Luxman is, in some ways, to tell the story of Japanese hi-fi. It was born in a completely original way, within the Kinsuido Picture Frame Store, a frame and artwork store owned by the two founders, T. Hayakawa and K. Yoshikawa, who immediately understood the cultural and commercial potential of radio–in its infancy and then seen almost as a form of magic–in a Japan that was just entering the age of broadcasting. And so Hayakawa and Yoshikawa began a small radio production. <\/p>\n

At the time, Japan was almost completely dependent on American and European components. Luxman sensed very early on that true quality would only come with in-house production of critical components. Thus were born the first in-house designed transformers and commutators, elements that helped build the brand’s reputation as early as the 1930s. Luxman output transformers became famous for precision and musicality, and to this day are still considered a fundamental part of the “Luxman sound.” In the war and immediate postwar years, the company survived Japan’s enormous industrial difficulties by maintaining a strong technical focus. In 1952 the historic OY transformers appeared, now almost legendary among collectors of Japanese tube equipment. At that time Luxman also began publishing technical and popular material devoted to radio and audio electronics, contributing to the education of a generation of technicians and enthusiasts. <\/p>\n

The 1950s and 1960s were pivotal because they coincided with the birth of modern high fidelity: Luxman began producing complete tube amplifiers, preamplifiers, and receivers that sought not power, but naturalness of tone. Just at a time when many companies aimed to impress with aggressive technical specifications, Luxman instead developed an elegant, warm, and refined sound philosophy. Witness that trend: the MQ-60, MQ-68 and SQ-38, tube amplifiers that are still highly rated today. SQ-38, which appeared in the early 1960s, is perhaps the most recognizable symbol of classic Luxman: gold-plated front and wooden cabinet. Then came the transistor in the 1960s, and many companies-but not Luxman-abandoned tubes altogether. Luxman, on the other hand, continued to develop both technologies, and is still one of the very few historical manufacturers to have kept valve amplifiers in production without interruption from the postwar period to the present. In the 1970s came the real international boom. Japan was becoming the world center of consumer electronics, and Luxman found itself competing with such giants as Sansui, Pioneer, Technics and Accuphase, but without making the mistake of entering the “power war”-that is, the race for ever more powerful and spectacular amplifiers-while maintaining an almost aristocratic position.

M4000 was a 300W per channel power amp with a highly original cooling fin. The look was marvelous and it differed markedly from any competitive amplifier <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

They were extraordinary years for the brand: the C-1000 and C-1010 preamplifiers, the M-4000 and M-6000 power amplifiers, as well as a series of integrated amplifiers such as the L-58A, L-80V and L-85V. The Luxman design of that period is still considered one of the most elegant ever produced: large vu meters, champagne panels, knobs machined with almost handcrafted precision, and manic interior construction. The M-4000 power amp, with its huge illuminated vu-meters and impressive weight, represented perhaps the high point of “classic” Luxman. In parallel, Luxman continued to perfect tube amplifiers: the MQ-88, CL-35 and CL-40 became cult objects. Luxman also became a school of audio excellence; designers such as EAR Yoshino – Air Tight<\/a> and Leben<\/a>, to name but one – cut their teeth in the Japanese manufacturer’s technical team. The 1980s, on the other hand, were complex. On the one hand, Luxman produced extraordinary equipment such as the M-05, M-07, C-05 and the R-117 receiver; on the other hand, the hi-fi market was changing dramatically. The advent of the compact disc, price competition and the transformation of audio into a mass product created enormous economic difficulties. At that time Luxman entered Alpine<\/a>‘s orbit. Many enthusiasts consider this a controversial phase: some products became more commercial and less refined than the achievements of the 1970s. In the 1990s came the slow rebirth, with a return to its roots: Japanese construction, refined circuitry, a search for the “Luxman sound.” This was the period of the “u” series – L-505u, L-507u and L-509u – integrated amplifiers that brought the brand back to the top of world high fidelity. <\/p>\n

In parallel, Luxman began to develop digital sources, SACD players, and DACs that sought to transfer to the digital domain that same fluidity and naturalness that had made the historic tube amplifiers famous. The D-05u and DA-06 showed how the brand knew how to address the era of high-resolution audio without losing identity. In recent years Luxman has experienced a new golden age. The current L-509Z<\/a>, under review here on the channel, MQ-300<\/a> and the PD-171A<\/a> turntable have consolidated the brand’s reputation. MQ-300, in particular, has become a kind of modern tribute to the golden age of tubes, thanks to the use of the very rare Western Electric 300Bs<\/a>. <\/p>\n

In 2025, the company celebrated its centennial with commemorative devices such as theL-100<\/a> Centennial and the D-100 Centennial<\/a>, symbols of a technical and cultural continuity that is extremely rare in the world of audio electronics. For many enthusiasts, owning a Luxman means not only having an amplifier or audio source, but getting in touch with a nearly 100-year tradition of refined engineering, worship of detail, and obsessive pursuit of musicality.
