Its equipment has always conveyed such a feeling of authority and elegance as to place it in a kind of temporal &#8220;limbo.&#8221; In my memory, this manufacturer has never allowed itself to be seduced by the fashions of the moment, and that is why today&#8217;s Luxmans, to a less than attentive eye, could be mistaken for those of several years ago. The<a href=\"https:\/\/www.luxman.com\/product\/detail.php?id=45\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Luxman L-509Z integrated amplifier<\/a> we are trying out today, with a purely analog setup, does not deviate from tradition and therefore concedes little to modernity on an aesthetic level. Quite different is the matter with regard to the technologies on board, which are instead state-of-the-art. In short, a concentrate of Japanese &#8220;understatement.&#8221;     <\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Luxman L-509Z Integrated Amplifier: <b>External Analysis<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>I would begin the description of the Luxman L-509Z integrated amplifier by starting with the front panel. In my opinion, it represents the successful outcome of the search for a timeless aesthetic not conditioned by the fashions of the moment that oscillate between absolute minimalism &#8211; sometimes excessive &#8211; and technological complacency that often manifests itself in a riot of colored OLED screens sometimes unreadable at home because of their microscopic size. In the center make a fine show of two large VU Meters &#8211; real, not reproduced in graphics &#8211; with a white background, between which sits an illuminated numerical indicator giving an account of the volume level. On the sides we find the volume knob, on the right, and the input selector on the left. Below the instruments is a large set of controls among which are the tone controls, which are as many as three considering the midrange adjustment, then the <i>balance, <\/i> the active speaker system sector (A, B, A+B, Off), the phono input selector with two output voltage acceptance values for moving coil (MC) cartridges, as well as the classic MM. Thanks to the <i>Straight <\/i>button, the tone control section can be completely bypassed, a solution that will please the most purist users (including yours truly). The <i>separate<\/i> button serves to decouple the preamplifier section from the power section so that the inputs\/outputs on the rear panel can be exploited for the purpose of possibly inserting a signal processor or other. The presence of dual 6.5 and 3.5 mm headphone outputs ensures great versatility in that compartment. The two inputs, <i>Bal<\/i> <i>Line 1 <\/i>and <i>Bal Line 2<\/i>, are XLR type with reversible polarity. As a reminder, however, the Luxman L-509Z is not inherently balanced and therefore these inputs are followed by an unbalanced section. Line inputs 1 through 4 are on RCAs with the first two having connectors of much higher quality than the others. Also on RCA we have the two <i>pre-outs, <\/i>to be used for example with subwoofers, and the <i>main <\/i>in for connection to the power amp section. Note the double set of binding posts for speakers and the two XLR line inputs. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h2>Luxman L-509Z Integrated Amplifier: <b>Technical Analysis<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Let me remind you that the Luxman L-509Z integrated amplifier is not equipped with digital inputs, internal DAC, streaming section, in short none of those &#8220;modernities&#8221; that we now almost take for granted. Indeed, there is the fact that this is a decidedly high-end product, intended for a knowledgeable audience that would probably frown upon any internal device that might be a potential disruptive element in the delicate internal balance. Note the generous power supply section in the center and the special way the pre section boards are connected near the rear panel. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Looking at the overall image of the interior, one cannot remain indifferent to the order that reigns supreme, highlighting moreover a construction that takes into due consideration the simplification of any maintenance work that may be necessary during the life of the device. In the center stands a power section that employs a large 600 VA laminated transformer with an &#8220;E-I&#8221; core and eight capacitors for a total leveling capacity of 80,000 uF. On either side are the two power sections whose heatsinks are contained within the cabinet enclosure. Each channel of the L-509Z&#8217;s class AB output stage uses bipolar transistors in a three-stage Darlington configuration with a quadruple-parallel <i>push-pull<\/i> scheme to provide 120 W into 8 ohms and 220W into 4 ohms. This system, which is used in both the preamplifier and power sections, aims to reduce the undesirable effects of using negative feedback while improving the S\/R ratio and distortion. The Luxman L-509Z integrated amplifier includes tone controls for bass and treble, supplemented by the &#8220;MIDDLE&#8221; knob, which the manufacturer says acts in the frequency band of vocals and solo instruments. This is a technology that Luxman has been developing since 2006, which is basically the combination of a high-precision rotary encoder with a newly developed weighted rotation mechanism. All of which allows for great reliability coupled with a particularly natural feel for use. Normally on a printed circuit board, a thin lacquer-like polymer is used as a solder mask to prevent unwanted accumulation of tin between closely spaced components and solder pads; moreover, such a mask, which is permanent, provides some sort of protection to the conducting tracks during the manufacturing stages. However, it can cause the occurrence of parasitic capacitance, which, according to Luxman, can have a blurring effect on audio signals. In Luxman&#8217;s manufacturing process, the mask is removable-and actually removed-eliminating the risk of parasitic capacitance. Another interesting aspect of the circuit boards is the sinuous, curved path of the 0.1-mm-thick gold-plated tracks used for each channel of the L-509Z&#8217;s power section and in other internal parts. Again according to the manufacturer, this particular type of tracks results in better sound, optimized current flow, and lower inductance than PCB tracks with right-angle signal path direction changes. Both are stand-mounted speakers of medium efficiency and very high quality although they have very different sonic personalities. As a digital source we used the Linn Selekt DSM and, alternatively, the Aqua La Scala MKII DAC driven in USB by our self-built server with JCat components on which runs the Audiolinux operating system. A New Horizon 303i turntable with an Ortofon 2M Bronze MM phono cartridge was used as the analog source. Signal and power wiring as well as power supply is from Neutral Cable Reference series.    <\/p>\n<p>The first impression, often, is what defines the overall flavor of the entire test, and in the case of this integrated amplifier, too, I can say that this statement proved to be true. True: the L-509Z does not offer particularly high power, but its 120W into 8\u03a9 is more than enough to get away with it in the vast majority of situations. Nevertheless, with both speakers, the first impression was that there was little impact. That timbrally everything was right, but that it lacked the bit of drive that makes the reproduced music come alive. That feeling, which accompanied me during the first few hours of listening, faded as I came into contact, in tune, with the Japanese integrated. It is not in fact a lack of power, that is there and is more than enough, but a very compassed way of delivering the music. What needs to be focused on is not the dynamic <i>swings <\/i>, but the density of the sound and its color. A very natural sound that should not be compared with the memory of listening with other reproduction systems, but with the live experience. If one makes this mental shift, I think one better understands the intent of the Luxman designers who did not go in the direction of showmanship, but in the opposite direction. That is, that of analysis, even introspection. And boy is there dynamics! But here we are talking primarily about <em>micro dynamics<\/em>, that is, that ability to bring to light the most subtle details of the touch of a piano key, or the caving of a bow on a double bass. Here, then, we begin to better delineate the <i style=\"font-size: 18px; font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; text-align: var(--text-align);\">design brief<\/i> to which Luxman&#8217;s engineers have responded with the L-509Z: a top-end integrated amplifier, totally analog and totally divorced from an idea of sound as entertainment. Indeed, I would say that this amplifier is particularly rewarding for those who like to go in search of detail that is nevertheless offered in a framework of overall naturalness. That said, it is clear that the downstream and upstream partners must be endowed with the same characteristics. Particularly with the Marten Parker Duo and the Linn Selekt DSM the pairing turned out to be particularly well matched. The Scottish DAC\/streamer dispenses detail and resolution, plus its disruptive personality balances out the emotional detachment of the Luxman L-509Z to some degree. Finally, the Swedish speakers, with their timbral balance and ability to descend into the low range, operate a truly exemplary sonic synthesis. Particularly with this pairing, I was able to appreciate a very articulate and deeply layered virtual soundstage, with the various instrumental groups firmly anchored in their positions. Once again, at the risk of being repetitive, I want to point out that here we are at the antipodes of the concept of &#8220;muscular expressiveness&#8221; or &#8220;brute force&#8221; as it may be. Here we are talking about <em>grace<\/em> and <em>elegance.<\/em>                    <\/p>\n<p>To conclude a few more words about the phono stage, which showed remarkable qualities of quietness, detail extraction capability and excellent dynamics. We used it with an excellent MM cartridge but not with a MC, so we cannot consider ours an exhaustive test. However, I think I can say that for most potential turntable users this phono stage will make it possible to avoid the purchase of a dedicated external unit.<br \/>\n<!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h2><b>Conclusions<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>The Luxman L-509Z does not fit into the ranks of the muscular Super Integratos we have tested on Audio 2G over the past few months essentially because it is not a particularly powerful amplifier. Nevertheless, it is an amplifier that has all the makings of an amplifier that can captivate the mature audiophile capable of discerning the most important quality aspects in both design and purely sonic terms. The care taken in the realization is a joy to behold as only some (few) Japanese components manage to dispense. If we combine this with an understated, elegant and vaguely <i>retro <\/i>aesthetic we have a sufficiently defined picture.
