The first impression, the one formed even before turning on the device, is very positive. The weight-about twenty-two kilograms-immediately communicates the presence of electronics of a certain level. The machined aluminum front panel has a finish that holds up to European competition, with a large, well-centered volume knob that rotates smoothly. It differs markedly from the controls found in products in even the same category, and in fact is of the same caliber as the top-of-the-line SA series, and is directly borrowed from the celebratory <a href=\"https:\/\/www.denon.com\/en\/product\/amplifiers\/pma-a110\/PMAA110.html\">PMA110<\/a>, for Denon&#8217;s 110th anniversary ( <a href=\"https:\/\/www.denon.com\/en\/\">Denon<\/a> &#8216;s history can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/audio-2g.com\/en\/denon-a-long-history-of-excellence\/\">here<\/a>). The chassis is sturdy, and uses side panels that when disassembled expose the end sections and preamp part, making any service operations much easier. The back is well organized, with adequate quality RCA connectors and speaker terminals-double, for biwiring-that accept banana and lugs without difficulty. PMA3000NE is directly derived from this model <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The design follows the Ultra High Current philosophy that Denon has been pursuing for years. The transformers are two of the traditional, generously sized type, shielded by thick copper plates. The two filter capacitors are Denon branded, and are supposed to be 10,000 \u00b5F each, but the capacitance is not stated on the case. This is a big change from previous Denon amplifiers, which used the Burr-Brown\/Texas Instruments PCM1795 chip. The machine dates back to 2024, the year in which ES9018 debuted, so as dated as it may seem today, it certainly was not when PMA-3000NE was introduced. One very interesting aspect is the ability to completely turn off the DAC via the &#8220;analog mode&#8221; button, which physically removes power from the transformer of the conversion section only (located on the front panel), making the amplifier for all intents and purposes &#8220;pure analog.&#8221; The DAC&#8217;s dual differential mode, so 2 chips per channel and 4 in all, is a well-established technique that is used to approach the theoretical limits of the converter by exploiting symmetry to &#8220;erase&#8221; imperfections. Many advantages are achieved. Noise reduction: the two chips process the same signal with opposite polarities (+\/-) and when recombined the common noise is cancelled and the useful signal is summed. Even-order distortions (2nd harmonic, 4th&#8230;) are equal on both differential branches and cancel upon recombination, only odd-order distortions remain, which are lower and much less annoying. Finally, the useful signal doubles in level, theoretically gaining 6 dB of swing and thus improving the overall signal-to-noise ratio. PMA-3000NE is also equipped with a phono stage, in this case compatible with MM and MC cartridges, and with an acceptance of 130 mV\/10 mV<br \/>\n<!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h2>A different volume control<\/h2>\n<p>In the traditional, i.e., potentiometer or attenuator approach, the signal enters at full amplitude and is attenuated by the potentiometer resistor and then goes into the first stage of amplification. The problem with this system is that lowering the volume worsens the S\/N ratio, because the first-stage noise remains constant while the useful signal is reduced. In the &#8220;Variable Gain&#8221; of the PMA-3000NE, the signal goes directly to a stage whose gain is dynamically changed according to the volume position. Thus, the signal is not attenuated first, but the amplification of the stage itself is varied. In this way the noise of the stage is directly proportional to the signal, maintaining a more constant S\/N ratio at any listening level. Interesting, then, is the unified tone and balance control system, handled by the same variable-gain stage, not by separate passive RC networks. It feels like looking at a much more expensive product <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>A very fine construction<\/h2>\n<p>PMA-3000NE is entirely designed and assembled by hand at Denon&#8217;s Shirakawa plant, a facility Denon reserves exclusively for its flagship products. This is not just a marketing detail; Shirakawa stands for manual quality control on every single unit, with tolerances and care that automated mass production lines cannot guarantee. The main chassis is made of generously thick steel, and compared to its predecessor PMA-2500NE, the PMA-3000NE incorporates numerous refinements, including a thicker main PCB; the internal structure then has six shielded blocks: the interior of the PMA-3000NE is not one large open space, but rather a carefully divided structure. The physical and shielded separation of the functional blocks is a high-level construction choice: each section-power supply, preamplifier, power stage-lives in its own isolated compartment, minimizing both conducted and radiated noise coupling paths. Into the volume pot passes not the audio signal but a voltage that drives the variable gain system <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This is all part of Denon&#8217;s proprietary system called LC (Leakage Cancelling), which uses power supplies in parallel to automatically cancel each other&#8217;s magnetic radiation. Basically, the two transformers are oriented so that their respective stray magnetic fields oppose and cancel each other, instead of adding up and radiating interference to the circuits. The result is a significantly reduced &#8220;mains noise&#8221; of magnetic origin in the amplifier noise floor. Inside the chassis, Denon has not skimped on conductor quality; all internal wiring is made of OFC copper and the RCA connectors are machined brass, while the speaker binding posts are the same as those used in the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.denon.com\/en-us\/product\/av-receivers\/avr-a1h\/300585.html?srsltid=AfmBOoovCELKhK_6wZyQDQafZg-rkwsLtzJoDYfxHE6IhHDOZR2i_cgQ\">AVR-A1H<\/a>. At the bottom are the digital inputs  <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In short, PMA-3000NE uses solutions that are very difficult to find in competitive products in the same price range. This is possible only because of an economy of scale that only very few manufacturers can afford, due to the number of parts and models produced, which gives them purchasing power, storage and cost optimization second to almost none.<br \/>\n<!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h2>Listening<\/h2>\n<p>Listening, conducted with Indiana Line&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indianaline.com\/it\/prodotto\/lira-6\/\">Lira 6s<\/a> and a pair of Vivid <a href=\"https:\/\/vividaudio.com\/kaya\/kaya-s12\/\">KayaS12s<\/a>, begins with orchestral material. The PMA-3000NE handles dynamics with confidence, and the stability of the power section can be felt at the moments when the orchestra suddenly demands the maximum: there is no sense of compression, no hardening of the sound in the fortissimo. The midrange has a very convincing tonal density, and the strings in particular return a fullness that many class AB amplifiers in this range do not always provide. The bass is controlled and well-defined, without that tendency to bloat that sometimes accompanies amplifiers designed with an emphasis on numerical power. What is most striking is the behavior at low volumes. Many amplifiers, even valuable ones, lose resolution and coherence as soon as the level drops below a certain threshold: the soundstage falls flat, details are lost in the noise floor, and what remains is an opaque reproduction of what the music might be. The PMA-3000NE does not fall into this error. With the volume knob in the very first few degrees of useful travel, resolution remains surprisingly intact: sound planes remain distinct, mixing details continue to be perceptible, and music retains a three-dimensionality that in other contexts requires far more generous sound pressure levels. With rock and electronic music, the behavior is equally satisfactory on the analog amplification side: transients are precise, dynamics are real, and there is no feeling of fatigue in extended sessions. Same when listening to digital sources through the internal DAC. The ESS quartet is still able serenely to hold its own with current configurations; the sound is warm, smooth, in line with the amplifier&#8217;s timbral setting, and only by connecting a much higher-end product, such as our Aqua La Scala, can a substantial difference be felt, but we are also talking about two totally different levels. So the PMA-3000NE is a fully convincing amplifier-amplification, phono stage, and volume control quality-and it is a very attractive proposition for this price.    <\/p>\n<p>In short, really a nice product!
