\"Pro.Ject<\/p>\n

Pro-Ject<\/a> has steadily evolved the Debut<\/a> series over the years, transforming it from an entry-level line to an outsider for more important models. The latest addition is the Reference 10<\/a>, a name that leaves little doubt as to the Austrian brand’s intention to make a reference turntable in its range. The eldest of the Debuts retains the down-to-earth and effective approach of the best-loved Pro-Jects while flanking solutions derived from the top models. <\/p>\n

Technical analysis: minimalist and advanced<\/h2>\n

The established success of Pro-Ject turntables comes from rational construction and undoubted sonic effectiveness. Careful designs, attentive to the construction elements most influential on performance that progressively improve as they move up in the various categories. In the vast Austrian catalog, the Debut series is in an intermediate range. It consists of a basic platform with a rigid frame made of MDF<\/a> and belt drive on which different solutions are implemented. The Reference 10 is an evolution of the PRO models that follows their main aesthetic features. It is equally finished with matte black paint that chromatically detaches with other elements, such as the translucent acrylic platter or machined metal parts. Highlighted, for example, are the arm joint and the three support feet, which are adjustable and constructed from turned aluminum discs into which is inserted a TPE<\/a> vibration damping element on which is applied a layer of felt to protect the support surfaces. <\/p>\n

On the majority of models Pro-Ject employs the short-belt drive, which ensures optimal utilization of torque and quietness of the mechanism. On the most popular versions a plastic underplate is implemented while in this case there is a pulley made of machined billet aluminum that provides greater rotational mass. A polished steel pin is inserted in the center that will fit into a brass bushing attached to the frame. The mechanism includes a ball at the bottom of the channel, where the weight of the pin insists, to reduce friction and ensure quiet operation. The motor is located a short distance from the axis of the pivot and remains covered by the plate for the benefit of a clean design. It, too, has an aluminum pulley, with two grooves to accommodate both a flat belt for 33.3 and 45 rpm speeds and a round section belt to be used eventually for playing 78 rpm records. The motor is easily attached to the chassis through a flange with four screws to which vibration-isolating o-rings are attached. <\/p>\n

The plate is made from a disk of translucent acrylic three centimeters thick. It is machined internally to make room for the underplate. Included is the felt mat and an aluminum clamp, also with felt. It is not designed to flatten corrugated discs but serves to increase the rotating mass. Rotation however is electronically controlled by a circuit that transforms direct current, supplied by a wall-mounted power supply, into clean, stable alternating current for the motor. The claimed wow & flutter values are quite reassuring. With this system, moreover, speed change is done electronically, simply by operating a toggle switch on the left side of the frame. The tonearm is the element that most distinguishes the Reference 10 from the other models in the Debut series. A straight-barrel component was developed for this turntable, ten inches long (254 millimeters effective) with an integrated shell. The length is longer than that of its other siblings factor that limits radial reading error and thus improves tracking of the innermost grooves. The effective mass is 16 grams, a value that makes it suitable for heads of medium compliance. The tubular is made of a sandwich of carbon fiber and aluminum. The combination of two materials provides rigidity, lightness and control of unwanted vibration. Much attention is paid to the articulation, made of turned aluminum parts, a kind of concentric coupling between tubulars whose movements are entrusted to high-precision bearings. Reading weight adjustment is achieved with a counterweight that moves along a threaded rod, a solution introduced in the Pro-Ject Evo tonearms of the new Premium series. Compared to models with a smooth rod, it allows for greater precision in adjustment and stability of the counterweight without the need for tightening screws. In fact, the weight hole has two o-rings internally that provide a firm seal while acting as resonance dampers. There are no graduated scales, and the reading force must be measured with the supplied scale, a plastic bascule that is as simple as it is effective. The antiskating is as usual Pro-Ject flush. The tonearm collar, also made of turned aluminum, allows VTA adjustment via an Allen screw that tightens the tonearm engagement tube. Included is a complete set of tools for intervening at every “strategic” point on the arm as well as a paper template for accurate cartridge mounting and a cable of superior quality to the basic red-and-white.

The Reference 10 arrives equipped and set at the factory with a Pick It Pro Balanced<\/a> cartridge, a “special” MM. In fact, even the top of the Debut includes the balanced connection with the “B” phono preamplifiers that Pro-Ject introduced a few years ago. These units have, in addition to the classic unbalanced inputs in which the ground is referenced to the negative of the RCA pins, additional inputs configured with the ground separated so that, as is the case with balanced connections used in professional audio, any common-mode noise is cancelled out. The Debut Reference 10 has a five-pin mini XLR connector for this type of interfacing. <\/p>\n

With this interfacing Pro-Ject initially recommended only the use of cartridges. MMs in fact because of their high impedance generally have an internal shielding connected to a pin (usually the green one which is related to the negative of the right channel). Using balanced phono preamplifiers there would be no ground on that pin and consequently no protection against noise. In practice a normal MM could easily be noisy. Pro-Ject has thought of overcoming the obstacle by making in collaboration with Ortofon<\/a> the Pick It Pro Balanced, a lower inductance moving magnet that therefore does not need the aforementioned internal shielding. <\/p>\n

Pro-Ject defines the cartridges as balanced generators, even though there is no center pin, since the poles of each channel the signal is in phase opposition. He also explains how the presence of the internal shielding in regular MMs would lead to increased noise on the right channel if they were used in the balanced connection of his B-series phono preamplifiers. This is not the case with MC cartridges and the Pick it Pro Balanced specifically designed for such use. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Listening: Balanced<\/h2>\n

The test was carried out in a system consisting of an Arcam A15+<\/a> amplifier, KEF LS50<\/a> speakers and Pro-Ject DS3 B<\/a> phono preamplifier, the latter chosen because it allowed to take advantage of the balanced connection proposed by Pro-Ject. It is certainly not compulsory to employ this type of interfacing (a classic 47-kohm MM input would be adequate), but it is worth taking advantage of this feature, which other turntables do not have, and exploiting the synergy that the Austrian manufacturer has honed among its products. The Debut Reference 10 is a complete and balanced sounding turntable, with a sufficiently extended response, especially in the low range, that puts it in a prominent position in its price range. The timbre is correct, a characteristic that makes one appreciate acoustic instruments and the human voice. In evidence for example is the contrabass, in the jazz genre as well as in classical. The piano a bit in all its expressions is also appreciable. The high range appears soft, free of excess and harshness. This set-up makes it pleasant and low-fatigue, even if it can partly penalize transparency and detail, which, while largely sufficient, pay something compared to more expensive analog set-ups. A typical situation, found with mid-level MM cartridges whose behavior is good in all situations but leave more sophisticated MC models a fair margin of superiority. Dynamics are appreciable and demonstrate how Pro-Ject’s experience in building belt-drive, rigid-chassis turntables brings tangible results. Fast transitions appear and solidity is appreciated in the drum rendition. Also good is the spatial rendering in which the Reference 10 manages to build a proportionate soundstage, sufficiently large in size and with distinguishable sound parts. Overall one gets the feeling of listening to a very good turntable, with a “serious” arm, something that could belong to a higher category but that one takes home at a price that is still sustainable. Its down-to-earthness is for reference. <\/p>\n

Tuning and up-grades<\/h2>\n

As with any Pro-Ject turntable, the functionality is nearly flawless. We can note, however, how the antiskating struggles to hold the string in place, particularly when the arm is at rest. This can be solved by loosening the antiskating support arm with a screwdriver and then rotating it slightly so as to favor a more orthogonal pull direction. <\/p>\n

Upgrading the cartridge is something that sooner or later one feels the need for. In this case in addition to considering MC phono cartridges one can think of something more straightforward. The Pick It Pro Balanced is evidently derived from the Ortofon 2M<\/a>, a series in which styles are compatible among all models. It is therefore possible to take advantage of the body, which allows precisely the balanced connection, while applying a higher level stylus. The operation is almost as easy as changing the shell in EIA-attached arms. We did this by employing the stylus of a 2M Black<\/a>, doctored with a fine Shibata-cut diamond. The result was a definite leap forward in performance, quantifiable in noticeable increase in transparency and greater resolution. There was a noticeable increase in smoothness in rapid passages and generally greater naturalness. Even the balance of the low range changed with the lower register drying out and improved articulation. The original stylus in this respect retains perhaps more solid presence but actually pays for less accurate detail. This is an up-grade to consider and recommend (on a par with the 2M Bronze<\/a> stylus if the budget would not allow for the Black) and would make this turntable perform even better to the point of challenging systems of much higher caliber. <\/p>\n

Conclusions: the reference of concreteness<\/h2>\n

Through the Reference 10, Pro-Ject confirms the evolution that has already taken place with the Pro and Pro S models and surpasses the original category of the Debut line. It constitutes a kind of high-mid-level, looking up, adopting fine solutions and offering superior performance with a price that has grown but is still commensurate. Its practicality can actually be a reference. The result is a turntable that is easy to use and sounds very convincing, enough to suggest that it may approach the higher-end Pro-Ject and possibly be more affordable. <\/p>\n
