Each new generation has never been a mere aesthetic or commercial update, but rather the evolution of a specific design philosophy based on minimizing coloration, controlling vibrations, and progressively eliminating anything that might stand between the original recording and the listener. <\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bowers_%26_Wilkins\">history<\/a> of the series began in 1979 with the first 801, a loudspeaker destined to profoundly change the very concept of the home monitor. At a time when tonal neutrality was not yet a shared goal, the 801 was designed to reproduce the musical message without emphasis or coloration. It is here that many of the solutions later extended to lower-tier models made their debut: the Diamond tweeter, the Continuum cone, the Matrix structure, the Reverse Wrap cabinet, the Turbine Head, and the Aerofoil woofers. Each generation has represented a step forward in the quest for increasingly neutral and transparent sound reproduction. Click <a href=\"https:\/\/audio-2g.com\/il-cabinet-nei-d\u2026-nuova-frontiera\/\">here<\/a> to read an in-depth article on the importance of the cabinet.  <\/p>\n<p>Within the lineup, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bowerswilkins.com\/en\/product\/loudspeakers\/300876.html\">804<\/a> holds a special place. It is the most compact floor-standing model in the 800 Series and likely the one that best meets the needs of the home audiophile. It requires less demanding listening environments than the 801 and 802, offers a more manageable footprint and a more affordable price, while still sharing much of the technology developed for the flagship models. For this reason, it has for years been the most balanced entry point into the world of the 800 Series.<br \/>\n<!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h2>Developments<\/h2>\n<p>The most significant development of the platform came with the transition from the D2 to the D3; Bowers &#038; Wilkins radically changed its design methodology by introducing three-dimensional simulation using finite element analysis with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.comsol.com\/\">COMSOL Multiphysics<\/a>, integrated with the laser measurement system it had already been using for many years. The ability to continuously compare simulations with actual measurements allowed the company to progressively refine each component through an iterative process of analysis and optimization that still forms the basis of the 800 Series\u2019 development today. <\/p>\n<p>The D3 thus represented a true revolution. The new Reverse Wrap cabinet, with its curved surface forming the front of the speaker, significantly increased the cabinet\u2019s rigidity and eliminated the traditional front joints. The Matrix structure was further reinforced with metal components; the Tweeter-on-Top featured a body machined from a single block of aluminum\u2014as did the Turbine Head of the midrange, which in this series featured Continuum FS for the first time\u2014and the Aerofoil woofers further improved control over cone deformation. The D4 introduced the Biomimetic suspension in the Continuum FST midrange, which completely eliminated the spider\u2014a true revolution that remains unmatched to this day. In short, the D4 brought the design to such a level of maturity that further design revolutions became difficult to achieve.    <\/p>\n<p>And it is precisely this realization that gave rise to the D5 Series. The aluminum top plate introduced with the D4 is now complemented by a new bracing system consisting of aluminum rails and a new rear Space Frame Bracing that runs the entire height of the speaker. The front brackets and speaker mounting plates have also been reinforced, significantly increasing the structure\u2019s rigidity both longitudinally and transversely. The result is an even more inert enclosure, capable of better dissipating the energy generated by the transducers and contributing less and less to the sound produced.   <\/p>\n<p>The base has also been completely redesigned to increase its rigidity and, for the first time, incorporates tuned mass dampers (TMDs), a solution previously used exclusively in the Tweeter-on-Top series. Their purpose is to control the resonances of the aluminum components, which, as their rigidity increases, inevitably tend to shift their resonance frequency upward. Made of aluminum, this design is based on the experience gained with the Turbine Head found in the higher-end models. In addition to increasing mechanical rigidity, this new structure improves the decoupling of the midrange from the rest of the cabinet, reducing the influence of the high pressures generated by the woofers. After all, as you can read here, the new trend in high-end speaker design focuses on the cabinet; after many years of driver development, it has become clear that residual vibrations are the ones that need to be tackled most vigorously.<br \/>\n<!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>The Tweeter-on-Top retains the 25-mm diamond dome but introduces a new protective grille derived from the Signature models. The new geometry improves acoustic transparency and further reduces diffraction, contributing to a more uniform dispersion. <\/p>\n<p>The low-frequency section, on the other hand, continues to rely on 165-mm Aerofoil woofers, the same ones used in the previous series. The designers chose to focus their efforts not so much on the drivers themselves as on their integration with the cabinet and on controlling structural vibrations. The Biomimetic suspension remains exclusive to the midrange driver: Bowers &#038; Wilkins explained at the 2026 Vienna trade show, where they unveiled the new 800 Series, that they had considered applying the same principle to the woofers as well, but the much greater excursion does not yet allow for the required level of reliability.  <\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/audio-2g.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Screenshot-2026-07-21-alle-11.31.16-scaled.jpg\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/audio-2g.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Screenshot-2026-07-21-alle-11.31.16-scaled.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/audio-2g.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Screenshot-2026-07-21-alle-11.31.16-265x225.jpg 265w, https:\/\/audio-2g.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Screenshot-2026-07-21-alle-11.31.16-364x309.jpg 364w\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"2171\"\/><figcaption>The enclosure housing the midrange driver is made of aluminum<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The crossover has also undergone extensive refinement. The topology remains essentially unchanged from the D4, with a first-order filter for the tweeter, a second-order filter for the midrange, and a third-order filter for the woofers, but the quality of the components has improved significantly. Making their debut are Mundorf Supreme capacitors and Van den Hul silver internal wiring\u2014previously used in the Signature versions\u2014along with new cable insulation, low-loss brass terminals, and a reinforced crossover mount secured to the cabinet with sturdier anchors. These seemingly minor changes help both improve electrical conductivity and limit the impact of vibrations on the crossover\u2019s performance.   <\/p>\n<p>In terms of construction, the 804 D5 is slightly larger in size and, above all, heavier, weighing over 40 kilograms. This figure reflects the increased use of structural components and confirms that the primary goal of the design was to further enhance the speaker\u2019s overall rigidity. <\/p>\n<p>The design evolves subtly, without altering the identity of the 800 Series. The new Stealth Black, Warm White, Light Walnut, and Dark Walnut, combined with the Connolly leather-covered top panel and aluminum accents, give the D5 a more refined look while preserving the design language that has made Bowers &#038; Wilkins speakers instantly recognizable for over forty years. <\/p>\n<h2>Listening<\/h2>\n<p>The Bowers &#038; Wilkins 804 D5 speakers are probably one of the most well-balanced models in the entire 800 Series. These speakers don\u2019t try to impress; on the contrary, they win you over gradually, pushing any technical considerations into the background. They\u2019re one of those products that make you forget the medium and bring the music back to the forefront.  <\/p>\n<p>The first impression is one of extraordinary sonic continuity. There is no perceptible transition between the various drivers; it\u2019s as if the tweeter, midrange, and woofer were a single transducer capable of covering the entire audio bandwidth. This is a rare feature even among very high-end speakers and represents, in our opinion, one of the greatest achievements of Bowers &#038; Wilkins with this fifth generation of the 800 Series. The integration between the three drivers is simply perfect. The Diamond tweeter never stands out with artificial brilliance, the midrange doesn\u2019t seek the spotlight, and the woofers operate with such naturalness that they give the impression that everything originates from a single sound source.<br \/>\n<!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>It is precisely this consistency that makes listening to it incredibly relaxing. Nothing constantly draws your attention to a particular register. Every element contributes to creating a complete, cohesive, and credible musical message. This is where the speaker establishes its character and demonstrates the full maturity achieved by the Continuum design. The vocals are simply magnificent. They emerge with an almost disarming naturalness, rich in harmonics, perfectly sculpted, yet never made to sound artificially prominent. There is substance, there is body, but above all, there is an impressive wealth of nuance that allows you to capture every interpretive inflection of the artist.    <\/p>\n<p>The acoustic instruments offer a level of authenticity that is hard to find in this market segment. The piano conveys the full complexity of the soundboard; the cello retains that blend of wood and string that characterizes its tone; and the saxophone maintains its roughness without ever becoming harsh. This mid-range series isn\u2019t just technically sound\u2014it manages to convey emotion.  <\/p>\n<p>The high-frequency range represents the natural extension of this balance. The Diamond tweeter offers virtually unlimited extension, yet it never uses detail as a showpiece. The sound emerges with absolute naturalness. Reverbs unfold in space with impressive depth, drum cymbals retain their full harmonic structure, and vocals breathe within the recording environment without any harshness.   <\/p>\n<p>The low-frequency response also deserves special praise. The two Aerofoil woofers aren\u2019t meant to impress, but rather to build a solid, full, and perfectly articulated sound foundation. Every note is clear, and every dynamic variation is tracked with speed and precision. The bass has weight when needed, but above all, it always maintains control and articulation. The sound is rich in light, but not the kind of artificial light that emphasizes detail. It is a natural luminosity, composed of infinite shades of light and dark, capable of conveying depth, airiness, and three-dimensionality without losing tonal density. Each recording takes on its own atmosphere; each track tells a different story, and the speaker seems to adapt without ever imposing its own sonic signature.   <\/p>\n<p>This is probably the feature that impressed us the most. The 804 D5s manage to be extremely transparent without sounding cold. They\u2019re precise, but never analytical in the most sterile sense of the word. They always retain a romantic, almost nostalgic quality that invites you to listen to one album after another. There\u2019s no constant pursuit of detail for its own sake. Everything is geared toward recreating the musical experience.<br \/>\n<!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<p>Whether it\u2019s jazz, classical music, rock, or singer-songwriter music, the performance remains consistently compelling. Recordings change, instruments change, tonal balances change, but the speaker always maintains exemplary tonal accuracy. No musical genre seems to be favored over another. It\u2019s a rare quality, one found only in truly mature speakers.   <\/p>\n<p>One of the most memorable moments of our listening session was listening alongside Maestro Danilo Rea. From the very first tracks, his attention was focused precisely on this aspect. He repeatedly emphasized how the natural way the speaker reproduces the piano is one of its absolute strengths. For a musician, he told us, the quality of the midrange is probably the most important element of a playback system, because that\u2019s where the timbre, the touch, the harmonic weight of the instruments, and much of the emotion contained in a recording reside.   <\/p>\n<h2>Listening with Danilo Rea<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/audio-2g.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Screenshot-2026-07-21-alle-11.17.38-scaled.jpg\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/audio-2g.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Screenshot-2026-07-21-alle-11.17.38-scaled.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/audio-2g.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Screenshot-2026-07-21-alle-11.17.38-265x140.jpg 265w, https:\/\/audio-2g.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Screenshot-2026-07-21-alle-11.17.38-364x192.jpg 364w\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1351\"><\/p>\n<p>For his listening test, Danilo drew inspiration from the Signature Diamond (and the 805 D3) speakers he normally uses. His assessment was extremely clear. While acknowledging their qualities, he identified the new 804 D5s as a step forward in terms of naturalness, tonal consistency, and the ability to reproduce the musical message as a cohesive whole. In particular, he was impressed by the continuity between the midrange and treble and by how effortlessly the speaker tracks even the subtlest dynamic variations of the piano. Several times during the listening session, he remarked that these new 804 D5s possess a special charm\u2014a greater capacity for emotional engagement than the Signature Diamond models he has known for years. The 804 D5s are not designed to fill large rooms or spaces larger than thirty or thirty-five square meters, especially if high sound pressure levels are desired. In such cases, the laws of physics inevitably require turning to the 803 D5s or even higher-end models in the series. Within their ideal environment, however, they achieve a balance that has very few rivals. They offer a full, controlled bass, a wide and stable soundstage, a midrange that sets the standard, and an overall refinement that allows them to handle any musical repertoire without ever giving the impression of being a compromise.    <\/p>\n<p>At the end of the listening session, one feeling stands out above all others: that of having listened to one of the best speakers Bowers &#038; Wilkins has ever produced in this price range. The 804 D5s don\u2019t impress because they do anything spectacular, but because they do everything with extraordinary naturalness. They disappear from the room, allowing only the music to shine through, and manage to engage both the listener\u2019s intellect and emotions.
