It\u2019s not just a streamer or a particularly sophisticated D\/A converter\u2014and it would even be an understatement to call it a digital preamplifier. The LINK 10n likely represents, first and foremost, the culmination of a design journey that Marantz began many years ago and that has now reached full maturity. To truly understand the LINK 10n, it may be best to step outside the traditional framework we\u2019re used to applying when classifying Hi-Fi components. For over forty years, the ideal system was built around separate sources, a preamplifier, an integrated amplifier, and one or more power amplifiers. In fact, the MODEL 10, SACD 10, and LINK 10n share much more than just an aesthetic identity: they were designed as components of a single technological platform, developed without compromise and intended to set the new gold standard for the brand\u2019s products. Unpacking it requires almost as much care as handling a power amplifier. Its weight of over thirty-three kilograms is surprising for a component that, at least on paper, should be \u201cjust\u201d a digital source. Its substantial dimensions, combined with an extremely solid build, immediately convey the sense that you\u2019re looking at a reference-class piece of equipment. The milled aluminum front panel rests on a finely crafted back panel and represents one of the finest interpretations of Marantz\u2019s new design language. It is enhanced by subtle lighting that discreetly highlights the contrast between the two panels. Balanced and unbalanced analog inputs, an MM\/MC phono stage (the latter with 3 adjustable impedances: 32\/100\/390\u03a9), comprehensive digital connections, HDMI ARC, Ethernet, USB, fixed and variable outputs, XLR and RCA connections, and a dedicated subwoofer output with crossover frequencies of 40\/60\/80\/100\/120 Hz. Rather than the back of a streamer, it resembles that of a sophisticated control preamplifier. It is precisely by looking at these features that one understands the philosophy behind the LINK 10n. It was not designed to simply add a digital source to the system, but to become its operational hub. Analog sources, on the other hand, follow a completely different path, bypassing any analog-to-digital conversion and maintaining an entirely analog signal path all the way to the volume control section. This distinction is one of the most interesting aspects of the design. Many modern digital preamplifiers convert any analog source to digital to standardize its processing. Marantz, however, has chosen a different path, preserving the signal\u2019s original character.    <\/p>\n<h2>The MMM Converter, Marantz Musical Mastering<\/h2>\n<p>Unlike nearly all converters currently on the market, the LINK 10n does not use a commercial DAC chip manufactured by ESS, AKM, or Texas Instruments. The entire conversion process was developed in-house. The PCM signal, regardless of its original sampling frequency, is processed by a proprietary FPGA, where the first stage of the process\u2014called MMM-Stream\u2014takes place. Here, the PCM stream is completely reconstructed and converted into a one-bit DSD signal using a sophisticated sigma-delta modulator developed by Marantz. Next comes the second stage, MMM-Conversion, in which the DSD stream is converted directly to analog using a discrete one-bit converter followed by an analog low-pass filter. The result is an architecture that belongs neither to the family of R-2R converters nor to that of traditional delta-sigma DACs. Rather, it represents a modern reinterpretation of one-bit conversion, made possible by the computational power of contemporary FPGAs and the expertise Marantz has accumulated over more than thirty years of developing its own digital systems. Once the digital-to-analog conversion is complete, another fundamental element of the design comes into play: volume control. This is likely one of the least conspicuous yet most sophisticated aspects of the LINK 10n. Marantz has not disclosed the detailed operation of the circuit, but certain elements provide insight into its design philosophy. The presence of Source Direct mode and the absence of any mention of A\/D conversions on the analog inputs suggest that analog sources follow a dedicated path, separate from the digital one. This means that the LINK 10n can be used as a true analog preamplifier without forcing the signal from a turntable or external player to undergo a double analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog conversion. Volume control thus represents the intersection between the sophisticated MMM platform and Marantz\u2019s proprietary analog circuitry.            <\/p>\n<h2>HDAM-3<\/h2>\n<p>Developed as an alternative to traditional integrated operational amplifiers, HDAMs use only carefully selected discrete components and have been one of the hallmarks of Marantz\u2019s manufacturing for over thirty years; you can find a technical overview <a href=\"https:\/\/audio-2g.com\/en\/hdam-marantzs-discrete-circuitry\/\">here<\/a>. In the LINK 10n, they are used in the DAC\u2019s output stage, the preamp section, the MM\/MC phono circuit, and the headphone amplifier, creating a perfectly cohesive architecture. The electrical specifications confirm this design philosophy. The variable outputs feature extremely low impedance\u201430 ohms on the RCA connections and 140 ohms on the XLR connections\u2014while the maximum available voltage reaches 10 and 20 volts RMS, respectively. The front panel houses two large toroidal transformers, which are completely separate and enclosed within dedicated shielding. Each HDAM group has its own local decoupling, reducing the power supply impedance and ensuring an extremely fast response to current demands. The overall impression is that of a design developed starting from the power supply\u2014and not ending with it. The internal layout also merits consideration. The interior photographs show a rigorous compartmentalization of the chassis. The power supply section occupies a dedicated area, completely separate from the HEOS and MMM digital platforms and the analog output stages. Looking at the LINK 10n from the inside reveals a feature that perhaps no official photograph can fully convey. What is striking is not so much the presence of a particular technical solution as the extraordinary coherence of the whole. Every element seems to have been designed to work in harmony with the others, with no sections that were simply added or adapted as afterthoughts. This is likely the feature that sets the LINK 10n apart from most of its competitors. It is not so much the presence of a proprietary converter, discrete HDAM modules, or a dual toroidal power supply, but rather the fact that all these solutions were developed simultaneously as parts of a single design.     <\/p>\n<h2>Sophisticated Streaming<\/h2>\n<p>The LINK 10n is designed to be the heart of a modern hi-fi system, offering a comprehensive, versatile streaming platform that\u2019s seamlessly integrated into the Marantz ecosystem. Thanks to HEOS Built-in, it provides direct access to leading online music services, including Qobuz, TIDAL, and Spotify\u2014all in their Connect versions, <b> <\/b>Amazon Music and Internet radio, with the ability to control playback from the HEOS app and create multiroom systems with other devices in the ecosystem. Compatibility with AirPlay 2 ensures seamless integration with Apple devices, while Roon Ready certification makes it ideal for users of sophisticated music libraries and advanced audio management systems. This is evidenced by the presence of dedicated preamplified outputs, separate from the fixed-level line outputs. In fact, this is not simply a streamer with a digital volume control or an output stage adapted to directly drive a power amplifier. The LINK 10n is a true preamplifier, equipped with an analog section developed with the same care given to dedicated preamps, and this design choice becomes clear within the first few minutes of listening. The system used for the test consisted of the brand-new B&#038;W 804 D5s, alternated with the Vivid Audio Kaya S12s, the Unison Research Unico DM V2 power amplifier, and the New Horizon 301i turntable equipped with an Ortofon 2M Bronze cartridge. The impression is one of extremely refined reproduction, capable of combining precision and musicality without ever sounding artificial. The level of detail is very high, but it is never pushed to the forefront simply to impress. They impress not so much for their quantity as for their quality: the bass is perfectly defined, rhythmic, and fast, with sharp contours and a level of control that allows you to follow every note without any sense of bloat. Even the most high-energy recordings always retain remarkable intelligibility, without ever losing articulation or precision. The midrange is probably the LINK 10n\u2019s strongest point. Vocals sound free, natural, and believable, free of that slight coloration that often characterizes many digital products. Acoustic instruments retain rich harmonics and an extremely realistic presence, conveying a sense of fluidity that makes listening a relaxed experience even after many hours. The handling of silence is exemplary: each note has its own attack and natural decay, and between notes, there is all the breathing room needed to reconstruct the musical event with extraordinary credibility. The high frequencies are equally convincing. They are extended, perfectly focused, and rich in subtle details, yet never aggressive or fatiguing. The soundstage is exceptionally wide, but above all, it has remarkable depth. The instruments occupy well-defined positions, the soundstage remains stable even during the most complex passages, and the sense of three-dimensionality surpasses that offered by many competing streamers. You can clearly hear the work that\u2019s gone into the analog section and the power supply\u2014aspects that allow the LINK 10n to deliver a solid, stable, and utterly convincing soundstage. Even when used simply as an analog preamplifier, the LINK 10n performs its task with the same character it displays in the digital section. Anyone who thinks that an \u201call-in-one\u201d device inevitably represents a compromise will have to think again. To test this, we connected the Rockna Signature\u2014which we\u2019ve previously reviewed and used in fixed-level mode\u2014to the XLR input. In this configuration, the LINK 10n was limited to acting as a preamplifier, responsible solely for volume control. The result was surprising: no perceptible coloration, no loss of transparency\u2014just the ability to let the DAC perform under the best possible conditions. It\u2019s one of those components that invites you to listen to one album after another, forgetting about the system and focusing solely on the music. The only real limitation is what you connect to it. The Marantz catalog includes the MODEL 10, the super integrated amplifier we\u2019ve already reviewed and which stands as an absolute benchmark in its category. Yet the LINK 10n suggests it can express even more when paired with a dedicated power amplifier. Perhaps Marantz is indeed developing a separate high-end power amplifier; there have been rumors for some time, but there is no official confirmation at this time. One thing, however, is certain: a piece of equipment this neutral, transparent, and controlled deserves electronics of the same caliber. The LINK 10n is not simply an excellent network streamer. It is a reference-class component that combines, in a single chassis, a top-tier digital source and a true analog preamplifier, capable of directly driving a power amplifier without making you miss many dedicated components. Its performance goes far beyond what is normally associated with a network player, and in terms of balance, transparency, sonic maturity, and the quality of its analog section, it fully belongs in the world of high-end audio.
