A musician even before he became an entrepreneur, Michaelson had studied the clarinet and had prior experience in the world of tube amplification. Before founding Musical Fidelity, he had in fact been involved with Michaelson & Austin, a British company best known for its high-power tube amplifiers. That venture ended without commercial success, but it gave Michaelson firsthand knowledge of both audio design and the challenges associated with the production and marketing of Hi-Fi equipment.

Musical Fidelity was born almost out of personal necessity. Michaelson wasn’t satisfied with the preamplifier he was using in his own system, so he built one for himself (just as Soul Marantz did—read the story here). After hearing it, a dealer asked him to build a few units; they sold quickly, and from that episode, a new business took shape. The first product marketed under the Musical Fidelity brand was The Preamp, introduced in 1982 and followed by the Dr. Thomas power amplifier, a compact unit built in the typical British “shoebox” format. This was not yet the Musical Fidelity known for its large amplifiers and monumental electronics, but certain elements that would define the company’s entire history were already evident: relatively simple circuitry, attention to power supply design, a commitment to offering high performance at affordable prices, and a certain disregard for market conventions. The product that transformed Musical Fidelity from a young British manufacturer into an internationally recognized brand was the A1. There is a slight discrepancy regarding the exact date even in the company’s current documentation: Musical Fidelity’s official timeline places its launch in 1984, while the page dedicated to the modern reissue lists 1985 as the year the original was released. It is therefore correct to place its debut between 1984 and 1985, at the height of the British Hi-Fi renaissance.

The A1 was an integrated amplifier rated at approximately 20–25 watts per channel, heavily biased in Class A. Its design was immediately recognizable: the cabinet itself, with its finned top surface, served as a large heat sink. During operation, it reached very high temperatures, a direct consequence of the output stage’s bias and the compact dimensions within which the circuit had been housed. It was an amplifier designed to offer, at a relatively affordable price, a smooth, full-bodied sound free of the harshness often associated with the inexpensive transistor amplifiers of the time—almost all of which were Japanese.

Michaelson would later state that, with the A1, Musical Fidelity had helped create a new category: “budget audiophile” amplification—an affordable product capable of introducing the buyer to a listening experience previously associated with much more expensive equipment. The project is also linked to the work of Tim de Paravicini, but it would be reductive to attribute the entire creation of the device to a single person without distinguishing between product conception, circuit development, and industrialization. The A1 was the result of the collaboration between Michaelson and de Paravicini within Musical Fidelity’s original organization and became the company’s most enduring symbol. The success of the A1 paved the way for a much broader product line. In the second half of the 1980s, the A100 was introduced—more powerful yet still rooted in the Class A philosophy—along with a series of preamplifiers and power amplifiers that propelled Musical Fidelity into higher market segments. Among these, the A370—introduced in 1986—was particularly significant: a large transistor power amplifier delivering approximately 185 watts per channel, capable of driving speakers far more demanding than those typically associated with British integrated amplifiers of the era. With the A370, Musical Fidelity clearly demonstrated for the first time its focus on large current reserves and very high power output—a trend that would recur repeatedly in its subsequent products. Musical Fidelity was among the first to tackle the issue of digital conversion. The Digilog, released in the late 1980s, was the first budget standalone D/A converter aimed at an audiophile audience and sold at a lower price than many of the high-end alternatives available at the time. It was 1988.

The Digilog, which appeared in the late 1980s, was the first standalone budget D/A converter

In 1992, the A1000 was introduced—a large integrated amplifier with a Class A power amplifier stage, the conceptual successor to the family launched by the A1 but built on a much more ambitious scale. The following year, Musical Fidelity introduced the Tubalog, a digital converter featuring a tube output stage. One of the most original breakthroughs came in 1995 with the X series. The first iconic model was the X-10D, a Class A tube line buffer housed in a small cylindrical enclosure. This was followed by converters, power supplies, headphone amplifiers, and other components featuring the same design. The X Series clearly demonstrated Michaelson’s ability to transform an inexpensive and unconventional industrial solution into a recognizable visual identity.

In 1997, Musical Fidelity introduced the Nu-Vista Preamp, launching one of the most important product lines in its history. The name derived from the use of Nuvistors—tiny metal-cased thermionic tubes developed by RCA in the late 1950s and used in the 1960s in electronic devices and measuring instruments—which represented the final evolution of thermionic tubes before their decline. Compared to traditional vacuum tubes, Nuvistors were very small, robust, had low microphonic effects, and were capable of operating with low noise. Michaelson purchased a substantial stock of Nuvistors and decided to use them in a limited series of audio components. The first Nu-Vista Preamp was produced in a run of 500 units, which, according to the company’s chronology, sold out within three months. This success led to the development of other models and established the Nuvistor as a sort of technological hallmark of Musical Fidelity.

Nuvistors are small metal-enveloped thermionic tubes developed by RCA, and they represented the final evolution of thermionic tubes before their decline.

In 2000, the Nu-Vista M3 was introduced—a limited-edition integrated amplifier that combined a Nuvistor-based preamp stage and a high-power transistor power amp section into a single unit. The Nu-Vista M3 is one of the key models in the brand’s history because it established the formula that Musical Fidelity would later repeat many times: small thermionic devices used for signal processing, very generous power supplies, and solid-state power amplifiers capable of driving difficult loads. Around the same time, the CD-PRE 24 was introduced, integrating a CD mechanism, DAC, and preamplifier, foreshadowing the trend toward consolidating multiple functions into a single unit—a trend that would later resurface with the kW and Encore systems. In 2002, research into miniaturized tubes led to the Tri-Vista series. In this case, Musical Fidelity used so-called “trivistors”—miniaturized thermionic devices distinct from Nuvistors and adapted for audio use. The lineup included amplifiers, players, and converters, among them the Tri-Vista 21 DAC. The series was produced in limited quantities—partly due to the limited availability of the tubes—and represented one of the most recognizable expressions of Musical Fidelity in the early 2000s.

The Nu-Vista M3 was the first integrated amplifier to combine, in a single unit, a Nuvistor-based preamp stage and a high-power transistor power amp section

At the same time, the company expanded its more traditional production. The A3, A3.2, A5, and A308 series became widely popular and likely contributed more to the brand’s commercial success than the expensive limited editions. The A3.2, for example, was a dual-mono integrated amplifier delivering 110 watts per channel, equipped with separate power supplies and an MM/MC phono stage, representative of Musical Fidelity’s philosophy at the time: adequate power, solid construction, and a sound signature that sought to combine the fluidity associated with tubes with the control of solid-state technology.

The M Series did not originate with the arrival of Heinz Lichtenegger and Audio Tuning’s ownership. It’s important to clarify this because the Musical Fidelity acronyms can be confusing: the Nu-Vista M3 from 2000 is not the same as the later M3 series, just as the M1 turntable from 2003 should not be confused with the M1 family of compact electronics developed years later. The M1, M3, M5, M6, and M8 series all belong, at least in their origins, to the Michaelson era. Prior to the 2018 sale, the catalog already included products from the M3, M5si, M6, and M8 lines, in addition to the Nu-Vista series, the MX, LX2, and V90 lines, and the Encore systems.

In 2003, Musical Fidelity took the concept of power to the extreme with the kW preamplifier and the kW power amplifier, capable of delivering power in the order of one kilowatt per channel and produced in a limited run of just 75 units. This system was followed by the kW500, a hybrid integrated amplifier with a tube preamp stage and a power amp section delivering approximately 500 watts per channel. The kW500 became one of the most celebrated products of the Michaelson era because it managed to pack into a single unit a level of power that was then unusual for a home integrated amplifier, while maintaining the hybrid design so dear to the manufacturer. The lineup later expanded to include the kW750 and, in 2006, the kW250S—a particularly complex unit that combined 250-watt dual-mono amplification, hybrid preamplification, a phono stage, a CD player with 24-bit/192 kHz conversion, an FM/DAB tuner, and an iPod input. The desire to produce both affordable equipment and top-of-the-line products simultaneously perhaps reached its most evident expression in 2009. On the one hand, Musical Fidelity offered the compact V Series, consisting of a DAC, phono preamp, and headphone amplifier at very affordable prices; on the other, it introduced the Titan, a limited-edition two-chassis power amplifier rated at one kilowatt per channel. The Titan utilized one chassis for the power supply and another for the amplification circuits, featuring a dual-mono architecture and balanced circuitry. Forty units were planned. Around the same time, the Primo preamplifier was introduced, built in Class A and equipped with fourteen hand-selected ECC81 tubes. This vast gap between the entry-level and flagship products was a deliberate choice by Michaelson, who was convinced that the brand should be judged on performance rather than rigidly confined to a single price range.

The kW250S was a particularly complex unit that combined 250-watt dual-mono amplification, hybrid preamplification, a phono stage, a CD player with 24-bit/192 kHz conversion, an FM/DAB tuner, and an iPod input

In the years that followed, Musical Fidelity continued to work on both Class A amplification and the integration of analog and digital technologies. The AMS series, featuring models such as the AMS100 power amplifier and the AMS Primo preamplifier, took the concept of Class A amplification to a new level. In 2011, the M1 CLiC combined analog sources, digital inputs, and network playback, winning the EISA Award for Network Music Player 2011–2012. The M1 family included several compact components, while the M3, M5, and M6 series occupied progressively higher segments of the product lineup.

Among the most representative models of this phase were the M3i, the M6i, and the subsequent M3si, M5si, and M6si. The M5si was one of the first major projects overseen directly by Simon Quarry, an engineer who joined Musical Fidelity in 2001 and went on to play a central role even after the change in ownership. Quarry also participated in the development of the M6 500i, a large dual-mono integrated amplifier, and the kW250S. The continuity of Musical Fidelity’s design philosophy cannot, therefore, be described simply as a break between the Michaelson era and the Pro-Ject era: certain engineers and several design concepts spanned both phases.

During the 2010s, the product lineup expanded further. The V90 series featured compact and relatively affordable electronics; the MX series occupied the mid-range segment; and the M3, M5, M6, and M8 families formed the core of the traditional product line. The Nuvistor series returned to the top with models such as the Nu-Vista 800, introduced in 2014 and marketed in the years immediately following. The Nu-Vista 800 was therefore already a product of the Michaelson era and not the result of subsequent ownership. The same applies to the M8 components and to much of the catalog’s structure that Audio Tuning would inherit in 2018.

The M6i is an integrated amplifier that enjoyed great commercial success. Introduced in the early 2000s, it remained in the product lineup until 2026, when it was replaced by the M6xi.

Michaelson also sought to bring Musical Fidelity into the connected audio systems market with the Encore line, introduced in the mid-2010s. The Encore 225 and Encore Connect combined ripping, storage, streaming, and digital conversion capabilities—and, in the case of the Encore 225, built-in amplification. It was an ambitious attempt to transform Musical Fidelity from a manufacturer primarily focused on analog amplification into a provider of complete systems for digital music. However, the move also highlighted just how complex it had become for a traditional Hi-Fi manufacturer to directly support the development and updating of IT platforms, network software, and user interfaces.

On May 8, 2018, Antony Michaelson sold Musical Fidelity to Audio Tuning Vertriebs GmbH, an Austrian company controlled by Heinz Lichtenegger. The correct statement is this: Musical Fidelity was not acquired directly by Pro-Ject Audio Systems, but by Audio Tuning, the group that also owns Pro-Ject and of which Lichtenegger is the owner. The relationship between the two companies was, however, very close. Audio Tuning had been distributing Musical Fidelity in Austria for over twenty years, and Lichtenegger had been familiar with the brand since he first entered the Hi-Fi industry.

In 2018, Heinz Lichtenegger (left), former CEO of Pro-Ject, acquired Musical Fidelity from Antony Michaelson (right)

The official press release announced that Michaelson would remain involved as a design consultant, that the core technical staff would be retained, and that the existing production facilities would continue to be used. The change in ownership therefore did not coincide with the launch of a new M series or a complete overhaul of the product lineup. Audio Tuning inherited a company that already had the M3, M5, M6, M8, Nu-Vista, MX, LX2, and V90 series and possessed a very extensive design archive.

The first product fully developed under Heinz Lichtenegger’s leadership was the M8xi, which went on sale in April 2020. Here, too, the story is more complex than it might seem. The general concept for the amplifier had been established between 2017 and 2018 by the previous Musical Fidelity, but the final design was developed in 2019 by a team consisting of Lichtenegger, Simon Quarry, and engineers from the manufacturing partners Canor and HiPro. The M8xi is therefore a true transitional product: it stems from an idea conceived during the final phase under Michaelson’s leadership but was finalized and brought to production by the new ownership. It is an integrated amplifier delivering 550 watts per channel into 8 ohms, featuring a dual-mono power supply, an independent preamplifier section, and an internal DAC. With Audio Tuning, production was gradually transferred and organized through an industrial network in which Canor, a Slovak company specializing in the manufacture of audio electronics, played a key role. At the same time, Musical Fidelity has continued to draw on the expertise of Simon Quarry, who returned to the company in 2019 after a brief stint elsewhere. The new ownership has updated the existing product lines and developed new products without compromising the brand’s traditional emphasis on generous power supplies, available power, analog circuitry, and driving capability. One of the most significant projects under Lichtenegger’s leadership was the renewal of the Nu-Vista family. This was not a matter of reviving a defunct name—since the Nu-Vista 800 was already in the lineup prior to the sale—but rather of transforming Nu-Vista into a more comprehensive and structured product line. This led to the introduction of the Nu-Vista PRE, the PAS and PAM power amplifiers, the DAC, the Vinyl 2 phono preamp, and the new versions of the Nu-Vista 800.2 and 600.2 integrated amplifiers. Continuity with the past is evident in the use of Nuvistors and the hybrid architecture, while the separate power supplies, mechanical construction, and internal layout have been redesigned for contemporary production.

The new A1 was developed by Simon Quarry based on historical schematics and examples. The preamplifier circuit is based on that of the original model, and the layout of the sections on the circuit board follows the design of the era.

The most striking historical revival, however, was that of the A1 (see the review here). Lichtenegger had a personal connection to that amplifier, which had been one of the first major products he distributed during his early career in Austria. After the acquisition, he wanted to bring it back into production—not simply as a modern device inspired by the original, but as a reissue that was as faithful as possible. Musical Fidelity had already revived the A1 name in 2008, but that model—while reminiscent of its predecessor both aesthetically and conceptually—featured a different circuit design. The 2023 project took a different approach.

The new A1 was developed by Simon Quarry based on historical schematics and examples. The preamplifier circuit replicates that of the original model, and the layout of the sections on the board faithfully follows the design of the era. However, this is not an indistinguishable replica. The transistors are selected modern equivalents, the passive components have been updated, the potentiometer is a motorized ALPS RK, a remote control has been added, and a “Direct” control allows one gain stage to be bypassed. The power supply has been modified by adopting separate windings for the two channels; the filtering capacitance has been increased; and noise, hum, and heat dissipation from the transformer have been reduced. The MM/MC phono stage has also been revised. It is therefore accurate to describe it as a faithful reissue in terms of topology and design philosophy, yet technically updated in its components, power supply, internal layout, and functions.

Today’s Musical Fidelity is not simply a subsidiary of Pro-Ject, nor is it an unchanged continuation of Michaelson’s company. It is a brand owned by Audio Tuning, part of the same industrial group as Pro-Ject, which retains its own design identity and independent product lineup. The Michaelson era defined the brand’s design language: the A1 and Class A models, the power of the A370, the hybrid combination of tubes and transistors, the small cylinders of the X series, the Nuvistors, the Tri-Vista and kW series, the Titan, and finally the M families. The Lichtenegger era inherited this legacy, reorganized it from an industrial standpoint, and chose to use it as the foundation for new products and carefully updated reissues of historic models.

The new NUVISTA series uses the same Nuvistor tubes as the early models but incorporates modern technologies and components (pictured: the interior of the NU VISTA 800.2)

Over the past forty years, Musical Fidelity has frequently changed its form, size, and price range. It has built small, high-powered integrated amplifiers, one-kilowatt power amplifiers, separate DACs when digital audio was still in its infancy, affordable tube buffers, CD players with unusual designs, all-in-one systems, fourteen-tube preamplifiers, and modern hybrid electronics with separate power supplies. Its identity cannot be reduced to a generic “British sound” or to a single technology. Rather, the true common thread has been the attempt to combine musicality, driving power, and value for money, moving fearlessly from the affordable to the most extreme high-end.

The A1 remains the product that best encapsulates this history. It is not the most powerful, the most complex, or the most expensive device ever built by Musical Fidelity, but it is the one that has most clearly defined the brand’s reputation. Its reissue, nearly forty years after the original, is not merely a nostalgic endeavor: it demonstrates how the transition from Antony Michaelson to Heinz Lichtenegger and Audio Tuning has been interpreted above all as a critical continuity, in which the brand’s historical legacy is preserved but not simply frozen in time.

The history of Musical Fidelity began in 1982 and, at least for its first thirty-six years, was closely tied to the personality of Antony Michaelson.
