Hegel A200 and H200: Two Souls, One Amplifier

Hegel is expanding its lineup with two integrated amplifiers that almost seem like two versions of the same unit. They are called A200 and H200 In fact, they share much of the amplification platform, differing mainly in the way Hegel chose to handle the sources.
The A200 features a fully analog design, while the H200 adds a DAC, digital inputs, and a complete streaming platform. Audiophiles can choose whether to purchase a traditional amplifier, to which they can connect their own sources, or to consolidate everything into a single component.
The core is the same. A robust Class AB amplifier capable of delivering 150 watts per channel into 8 ohms and rated as stable at loads as low as 2 ohms. Of course, it also features SoundEngine2, one of the Norwegian manufacturer’s most important proprietary technologies, developed to reduce distortion by intervening locally on the amplification stages without resorting to high levels of global negative feedback.
Of particular note is the damping factor, which is stated to be over 4,000 for both models—a very high value and a now-traditional feature of Hegel amplifiers—which should result in particularly effective control of the drivers at low frequencies.

Hegel A200: The Analog Choice

The A200, in particular, stands out as an interesting offering in the Hegel lineup. In a market where more and more integrated amplifiers are incorporating DACs, streamers, and software platforms, the Norwegian manufacturer is, in fact, taking the opposite approach.
It does not feature D/A conversion, digital inputs, or a network connection. It is an analog amplifier in the most traditional sense of the term and is therefore intended for those who already own a streamer or a DAC, or who prefer to keep the source and amplification separate.
The connectivity therefore includes two balanced XLR inputs (though it is not a true balanced design) and two RCA inputs, plus an MM phono input, which should not be considered an optional feature: In fact, Hegel states that the circuitry is derived from the V10 separate phono preamplifier, with FETs and operational amplifiers specifically selected for this application.
There is one fixed RCA output and one variable RCA output—which can be used for an external power amplifier or a subwoofer—as well as a headphone output.

Hegel H200: Integrated DAC and Streaming

The H200’s analog section is supplemented by a D/A converter, numerous digital inputs, and, most importantly, a comprehensive streaming platform.
The digital inputs include a coaxial S/PDIF input supporting up to 24-bit/192 kHz, two optical inputs supporting up to 24/96, a USB-B port supporting up to 24/192, and a USB-A port for playback from external storage devices. Of course, a network connection is also included.
When it comes to streaming, the H200 supports Spotify Connect Lossless, TIDAL Connect, Qobuz Connect, Apple AirPlay, Google Cast, and UPnP, and is Roon Ready. Through the Hegel Control app, you can also access Internet radio and podcasts via Airable and control the device’s main functions.
Also noteworthy is the inclusion of a coaxial digital output and the DAC Loop feature, which allows you to use an external DAC while keeping the H200 as the control center for digital sources and streaming.
To completely isolate the analog section from the digital section, Hegel has implemented digital shielding, achieved through circuit layout, signal routing, and the use of separate boards for some of the digital components, with the goal of limiting the propagation of switching noise toward the analog stages. On the H200, the number of XLR inputs is reduced to one, still accompanied by two RCA inputs and an MM phono input.

Both feature several functions designed to facilitate integration, including the ability to set a fixed level for each input, use the volume controls on a TV remote, and set the maximum volume and power-on volume. The H200 adds features related to its digital and network capabilities, such as Digital Input Sense and compatibility with Control4 and Crestron automation systems.

A200 or H200? Rather than two different amplifiers, the A200 and H200 can therefore be considered two ways of interpreting the same Hegel platform.
The power and fundamental characteristics of the amplification remain virtually unchanged; it’s the overall design that changes. The A200 is aimed primarily at those who already own a high-end digital source, want to choose their own DAC and streamer, or primarily use analog sources. The H200, on the other hand, is designed for integration and can serve as the centerpiece of a modern system on its own; all you need to add are a pair of speakers and, if desired, a turntable.

The Hegel A200 is priced at 3,295 euros, while the H200 costs 3,995 euros. The 700-euro difference does not buy you more power, but essentially the entire Hegel digital ecosystem: DAC, digital inputs, network connectivity, and a streamer.
