Klipsch Reference Signature: The Best of Both Worlds—Hi-Fi and Home Theater

Klipsch is expanding its product lineup with Reference Signature, a range of speakers positioned at the high end of its catalog that introduces technical innovations unprecedented for the American brand. The series will hit the market this winter and includes six models designed for both stereo playback and home theater systems. It celebrates the company’s 80th anniversary and represents a significant evolution from the traditional Reference lineups. In fact, this is not simply a further refinement of the Reference Premiere series, but a new line in which Klipsch introduces a three-way horn-loaded configuration—even for the midrange—accompanied by significantly more sophisticated cabinets and finishes. The stated goal is to bring the classic Klipsch DNA closer to the world of high-end Hi-Fi, while also paying homage to the world of cinema. Two floor-standing speakers, the RS-8301F and RS-6301F; two bookshelf speakers, the RS-8301M and RS-6301M, a center channel speaker, the RS-6301C, and an effects speaker, the RS-6101SA, which can be used as a surround speaker, height speaker, or Dolby Atmos element.

As we mentioned, the heart of the project is the new mid-high frequency driver, consisting of a unique phase-aligned horn in which the midrange is positioned directly within the tweeter’s structure, ensuring that the two frequency ranges are emitted from a common acoustic center. This is a particularly interesting solution because it allows for better phase control at the crossover point and achieves more uniform dispersion, with the goal of maintaining greater tonal consistency even when moving away from the ideal listening position—a philosophy that directly echoes one of Paul W. Klipsch’s most famous statements: “The midrange is where we live.” For high frequencies, the classic Klipsch LTS (Linear Travel Suspension) tweeter with a titanium diaphragm is used—an evolution of a solution the American manufacturer has employed for many years. The horn loading thus remains one of the fundamental elements of the new Reference Signature, preserving the characteristics of high efficiency, dynamics, and dispersion control that have always been associated with the American brand.

The dimensions and diameters of the speakers vary depending on the model. The 8301 series models use 8-inch woofers paired with a 6.5-inch midrange driver, while the 6301 series models feature 6.5-inch woofers and a 5.25-inch midrange driver. The floor-standing models use two woofers, as does the center channel, while the monitors use a single low-frequency driver. The woofer cones are made of Cerametallic, one of Klipsch’s most recognizable aesthetic and technical features, with its distinctive copper-colored finish. The RS-6301C center channel, instead of the classic symmetrical horizontal speaker arrangement typical of many center speakers, uses a vertical arrangement of the midrange-tweeter unit, reducing the horizontal lobing that can occur in traditional configurations. The RS-6101SA is the most versatile model in the family; it can be placed on top of one of the Reference Signature speakers and used as a Dolby Atmos module with sound directed toward the ceiling, or mounted on the wall to function as a height channel or rear surround speaker. A selector switch allows you to adjust the crossover and tailor the response to different usage scenarios. There are new features regarding the cabinet and finishes. The front panel is made from a single piece of BMC (Bulk Molding Compound), a particularly dense and rigid material used to create a stable base for the drivers and reduce unwanted resonances. The cabinet’s shape has also been designed with greater care than in lower-tier series, featuring curved edges intended to minimize diffraction and improve off-axis dispersion. The available finishes—Ebony and Walnut—feature horizontal grain patterns that follow the curves of the cabinet. A leather-covered top panel adds another distinctive touch, while metal spikes and rubber feet are provided for decoupling from the floor. The use of a true three-way configuration, the new phase-aligned midrange-tweeter unit, and a more refined build make this series particularly appealing for purely stereophonic use, while still offering a sufficiently detailed frequency response to build complete home theater systems.
