Marantz MCR 60n, the revolutionary compact system

Marantz is updating one of its longest-running and most popular products, the compact Melody Series system, with the introduction of the new MCR 60n —an all-in-one unit that combines an amplifier, CD player, streaming capabilities, radio, and a significantly more comprehensive set of inputs than the previous generation. The concept remains the same one that has ensured the success of the MCR series over the years: creating a compact unit to which you simply connect a pair of speakers to achieve a complete Hi-Fi system; however, the new model takes a significant step forward in both performance and versatility. The MCR 60n retains its signature compact form factor, with a width of just 28 cm, but adopts Marantz’s latest design language. The front panel is dominated by the three-line OLED display and the main controls, while the available finishes are Black and Champagne Gold. Its dimensions are very compact (280x303x111), making it easy to fit even in spaces where a traditional hi-fi system would be difficult to accommodate.

The amplifier section is the real innovation, but not the only one. It uses a Class D architecture capable of delivering 65 watts per channel into 4 ohms in stereo mode. But the MCR 60n actually has four amplifier channels, each rated at 33 watts into 4 ohms, which can be used in different configurations (in fact, the MCR 60n has 4 output terminals). In addition to standard stereo operation, it is possible to drive two pairs of speakers with independent volume control, set up a bi-amplification connection, or use the Parallel BTL configuration to increase driving power. This level of flexibility is unique for a unit of this size and makes the system much more versatile. Marantz states that it has also worked on the power supply, the internal layout of the circuits, and vibration control, with improvements aimed at reducing noise and enhancing the overall quality of playback. The MCR 60n is not intended to be “just” a feature-rich compact system, but has been designed as a true Hi-Fi component, also intended for use with high-quality speakers.

The digital platform has been completely updated with the HEOS system, which allows access to major streaming services and integrates the MCR 60n into a multiroom system. Supported services include Spotify Connect, Tidal, Deezer, and Amazon Music, among others, as well as Internet radio, while AirPlay 2 enables direct streaming from Apple devices. Network connectivity is available via Ethernet or Wi-Fi, and the device features two-way Bluetooth. Via the network and the rear USB-A port, the MCR 60n supports PCM up to 384 kHz and DSD up to 11.2 MHz, with gapless playback of FLAC, WAV, and DSD formats, and is Roon Ready. One of the most significant new features, however, is Dirac Live. The MCR 60n is designed to work with the well-known room correction system, available via an update and an optional license. This is a particularly interesting feature for a product in this category, especially considering that compact systems like this one are often installed in living rooms, bedrooms, or other spaces where speaker placement is constrained by furniture and cannot always adhere to the rules of a traditional Hi-Fi setup.

Marantz has, of course, not abandoned the physical media support that has always characterized the series. The front panel therefore still features a CD player compatible with CDs, CD-R/RWs, and discs containing MP3 and WMA files. In addition, there’s a DAB/DAB+ radio section alongside the traditional FM tuner. Connectivity is extensive. On the rear panel, you’ll find an analog line input, an optical digital input, and, most importantly, HDMI eARC, which allows you to connect directly to a TV and use the Marantz and stereo speakers for the audio of movies, TV series, and television programs. This makes the MCR 60n a viable alternative to soundbars for those who prefer to maintain a true stereo setup. There’s also a subwoofer output, along with a pre-amplified AUX output that can be assigned to the headphone output or the MM phono input.
