Leak has been back in the spotlight for a few years now, offering a vintage design that harks back to the company’s former glory but putting modern, up-to-date solutions inside the cabinet.
The Leak Sandwich 150 and Sandwich 250 speakers are the brand’s latest addition and are 2-way and 3-way speakers, respectively. To longtime enthusiasts, the word Sandwich will not bring to mind a sandwich but rather a series of speakers that several decades ago delighted many audiophiles.

Leak Sandwich 150 and 200: vintage and modern at the same time
The term Sandwich was used to refer to the midwoofer of the original model, characterized by the use of expanded polystyrene foam sandwiched between two aluminum sheets. The reason Leak engineers chose this solution was that this technique offered enough rigidity to ensure a sound that was safe from vibration and resonance. At the time this was a hot issue and many of you will remember the speaker cabinets of the times (we are talking 1961) not to mention the decidedly minimalist drivers to say the least. A full 63 years have passed since then, technologies have evolved, and Leak today decided to improve that technique. In the Leak 150 and 250 loudspeakers, the brand’s engineers used a type of aluminum characterized by greater stiffness qualities combined with a structural foam made of polymethacrylamide used in aeronautics. The use of this combination promises a smooth frequency response without peaks or dips.
The Leak Sandwich 150 and Sandwich 250 can count on a 30 mm dome tweeter. At the rear you will find a damped and isolated chamber that reduces the resonant frequency below the crossover region. Immediately below the tweeter is a 170-mm midwoofer. The Leak Sandwich 250, on the other hand, are 3-way speakers that in addition to the 30mm tweeter have a 280mm woofer and a 108mm midwoofer. Interestingly, the speakers are produced in matched pairs (one left and one right speaker) which should ensure excellent sound imaging and very accurate soundstage reconstruction. Sandwich structure also for the cabinets, which alternate between an outer layer of MDF and an inner layer of high-density particleboard designed to minimize the phenomenon of resonances. Finally on the back of the speakers you will find two specially designed reflex port outlets to minimize what in English is called “chaffing” literally puffing. Stands specially designed for the Model 250 are available.
