The "first time" of Esoteric

For everyone there is a first time. Even for Esoteric, which after more than 30 years spent building a reputation for absolute excellence in the world of digital audio, has decided to take a step that is as unprecedented as it is significant. The Japanese brand, famous for its SACD players, DACs, and reference transports (the VRDS is one of its excellences never sold to any manufacturer), is entering digital preamplifier territory for the first time with an extremely promising product.

A thoughtful, uncompromising debut

TheN-05XDrepresents more than just a catalog addition. It is the confirmation of an evolved strategic vision, capable of embracing the new requirements of digital listening without sacrificing the engineering philosophy that has always distinguished Esoteric. In fact, the new model fits into the “N” range, which stands -obviously- for Network, joining the three models already in the catalog, Grandioso N1T and N-03T, transport only, and N-01XD SE Network DAC flagship. N-05XD has an identity all its own: digital preamplifier, advanced DAC, high-end streamer and headphone amplifier, all packed into the classic Esoteric chassis.

DAC Master Sound Discrete

Esoteric for many years used Asaki Kasei chips, including for the Grandioso series machines, until, history notes, they were unavailable for a long time, prompting Esoteric and others to find alternative solutions. In the Japanese manufacturer’s case in a totally original way, with the new Master Sound Discrete DAC finding many different declinations, from the extreme one aboard Grandioso, to this one, equipped with the N-05XD but also the K-05XD CD/SACD player and DAC. Separate analog volume

N-05XD is fully balanced, meaning it handles the positive and negative polarities of the signal separately, so each channel needs two volume controls, 4 in all, then. Esoteric has developed for new requirements, i.e., modern electronics controllable via remote control and/or software the Esoteric-QVCS (Quad Volume Control System), which works entirely in the analog domain and offers independent adjustment for the left and right channels. The result is precise and consistent control that keeps the electrical parameters unchanged at any position of the potentiometer to ensure the exact same level at any position of the knob and ensuring minimal crosstalk (interaction between channels).

Buffer level Great

The buffer section is entrusted to the ESOTERIC-HCLD (High Current Line Driver) circuit, also borrowed directly from the company’s most exclusive electronics. Characterized by an incredible speed of response (2,000 V/μs) and a very high current delivery capacity, it allows uncommon reproduction dynamics and total control of the audio signal, even under demanding conditions. Another very interesting feature in the case of pairing with Esoteric power amplifiers or integrated amplifiers is the analog signal connection via ESL-A, this involves transmitting the signal in current and not in voltage minimizing if not zeroing impedance interactions in the cables.

No less well cared for is the section devoted to headphone listening, which is often neglected even in high-end products. Esoteric, on the other hand, has designed a self-contained headphone amplifier for the N-05XD, with HCLD circuitry separate from the line circuitry. The unit offers standard 6.3 mm and balanced XLR outputs, and can drive even high impedances, up to 600 ohms, with authority and refinement.

Full connectivity, but no Wi-Fi: by choice

The versatility of the N-05XD also extends to connectivity. The unit has a wealth of digital and analog inputs: two line inputs (RCA and XLR), two optical, two coaxial, USB-B, AES/EBU and Ethernet, as well as an upgraded Bluetooth receiver for direct streaming. Esoteric, however, decided not to include Wi-Fi, consistent with its philosophy of striving for maximum performance, achievable-according to the company-only through low-latency, low-interference physical connections.

Support for major streaming services and dedicated app

The N-05XD is compatible with the major high-resolution music services-MQA, Tidal, Qobuz, Spotify, and recently Qobuz Connect. It is also Roon Ready certified and able to read files from external HDDs, as well as being manageable via a proprietary app available for iOS and Android. There is also support for external clocks (10 MHz) with 50 Ω impedance, RS232 control ports, Mini-USB for software updates, and trigger in/out for integration with other electronics

A lid that defies convention

Immediately striking in this fixture is the solution adopted to secure the cover: a system that is at least unusual, relying on a metal ball placed in the center of the front edge. The sphere fits into a special recess made on the underside of the cover plate, resulting in a mechanism that we might call “partially floating.” A technical choice presumably aimed at reducing unwanted resonances and ensuring greater acoustic neutrality. Originality aside, there remains the merit of a very solid cabinet, constructed from thick aluminum plates, here in an elegant Silver finish – but also available in black – and resting on sturdy insulating metal feet. Kudos, then, to the build quality and attention to detail, which confirm the premium vocation of this product.

Listening: an extremely fulfilling journey

We were very impressed with the singular remote control Double-Face – never seen anything like it before-which serves on the one hand to control the amplification section and a possible SACD player, on the other hand that of DAC/Streamer so extremely convenient and easy to use. But let’s move on to listening. With Roon the Esoteric was immediately recognized and also the Esoteric Sound Stream App, once installed worked flawlessly proving to be fast and without hesitation, whether I was accessing files stored on my NAS or those on streaming systems that are accessed simply by providing my account credentials. The app is also used to do the software update, which is done automatically and which in our case also brought the newly created compatibility of all Esoteric network electronics with Qobuz Connect. From the very first minutes of listening, this component revealed without hesitation what is, without a doubt, its hallmark: naturalness. It is interesting to observe how a machine with an austere, sober but at the same time assertive look, the child of a project that makes ample use of the most advanced technology, manages to return a sound so transparent that its presence is almost forgotten. A quality, this, that leaves room only for music, testifying to a truly successful design balance.

The soundstage offered is solid, chiseled in every detail, and most striking is the ability with which this device manages to “read” and return with extreme authority even the smallest signals, those that contribute decisively to the definition of the scene and the localization of sound contributions in space. The result is a very credible, wide and well-organized soundstage, capable of enveloping the listener when the recording allows it, restoring that three-dimensionality and airiness that are prerogatives of rank systems. In the high range, the N-05XD shines in refinement and control, with silky but never attenuated treble, always in balance with the rest of the spectrum. The low end, on the other hand, does not just accompany: it is always in step, firm and rigorous, but at the same time capable of great authority, bringing depth and substance to the musical texture. In our test, the Esoteric N-05XD drove the S-05 power amp from the same manufacturer with great ease, exploiting its full potential and creating a pairing capable of expressing a structured, dynamic, and above all extremely emotionally satisfying sound. A listening that confirms, once again, Esoteric’s philosophy: to combine technical precision, construction quality and musical sensitivity, resulting in a sound experience that is not only impeccable from an objective point of view, but deeply involving for the listener.

Conclusion: a well-rounded Esoteric

With the N-05XD, Esoteric enters the world of digital preamplifiers for the first time, but it does so with a clear and consistent vision: to transfer all the experience accumulated over decades of audio design into the contemporary format par excellence, high-end streaming. The result is a product that makes no compromises, capable of offering modern functionality, fully analog architecture at critical points and, above all, the Esoteric sound, finally also in a more compact, flexible and relatively inexpensive system. A debut that already smacks of consecration.
