Prior to the last Monaco High End held last May, we were contacted by Linn who kindly offered us an interview with CEO Gilad Tiefenbrun who would give us a firsthand account of the features of the Linn Klimax Solo 500 monophonic amplifiers, which were the main novelty that the Glasgow-based company would present on that occasion. Of course, we eagerly accepted, and the result is the interview that you can see on our YouTube Channel. What we didn’t expect was that a pair of Klimax Solo 500s, a few days later, would join us in our studio in Rome for a much more in-depth listening session than the one held in Linn’s room in Munich.
A bit of Linn technique
Our regular readers will recall that in the fall of 2024 we tried the “big brothers” of these new power amps, namely the Linn Klimax Solo 800. I still retain a very pleasant memory of those devices, as well as the feeling that they were among the best (or perhaps the best?) power amplifiers ever passed through my studio in so many years of operation. Those amps, in addition to some peculiar technologies on board, are characterized by the not exactly popular price of about €90,000. I guess at Linn they must have asked themselves the question, “How to broaden the audience of potential buyers?” The Design Brief for the new Linn Klimax Solo 500s. was thus to make a product of more compact size, again in Class AB and less exorbitantly priced than the Klimax Solo 800, but at the same time equipped with as much as possible of the technology developed for the flagship model. It should be noted that there was already a product with the same name and similar aesthetics in the Scottish company’s catalog. A product that, moreover, had achieved great commercial success since the previous version of the Klimax Solo had been in the catalog from April 1999 to May 2025, as Mr. Tiefenbrun explained.
In summary, we can say that the Solo 500 takes the design themes introduced by Linn in the Klimax Solo 800 power amp and makes them more accessible. Power drops to 250 watts into 8 ohms, doubling to 500 watts into 4 ohms, figures that allow for a free-for-all choice of speakers. Like the flagship model, the Klimax Solo 500 also usesAdaptive Bias Control, which constantly monitors the amplifier’s output to ensure optimal performance, and Utopik high-speed power supplies, which use multiple feedback circuits to measure output against input at each stage of the power supply, filtering out noise transmitted from the mains and eliminating any hum. Since these are technologies of considerable interest, it is worthwhile to take a further look at each of them.

Adaptive Bias Control
To oversimplify the concept we could make an analogy between adaptive bias control and a smart thermostat. Traditional amplifiers maintain a constant bias current, regardless of the trend of the incoming music signal. It is a bit like keeping the house heating on full even on a mild day. The adaptive control developed by Linn, in contrast, continuously monitors the audio signal and adjusts the bias current accordingly in real time. This means that the amplifier always operates at its optimum point, delivering maximum performance while minimizing heat loss and power consumption. The implementation of such a design idea is not new, and over the years several manufacturers have attempted it, as it addresses one of the traditional problems inherent in class AB amplifier design. Linn, however, has succeeded because of its experience in using sophisticated DSPs.
In a conventional Class AB amplifier, the bias current of the active devices is usually set during the production phase, using a potentiometer, to a value predefined at the design stage. However, due to differences between the individual transistors used, temperature variations during use, and aging of components over time, this value of the bias current can deviate significantly from the ideal value over the life of the amplifier. To solve this problem, Linn has developed Adaptive Bias Control technology that establishes the optimal bias point dynamically and in real time by measuring, sampling and digitizing the current supplied to the output transistors. This data is processed by an FPGA, which calculates the bias corresponding to the measured current levels and implements a digital control circuit to keep this bias point constant for each individual transistor. This method, ensures that the optimal bias value is consistently applied and adjusted at any temperature, regardless of the position of the volume control or the dynamic changes required by the audio track being played. Mr. Tiefenbrun told us that with this technology, they were able to reduce total harmonic distortion (THD) by 80 percent compared to the previous model.
Utopik power supply
The Utopik switching power supply represents an equally impressive advance. We can imagine traditional linear feeders as water cisterns in old buildings: they store energy and release it when needed, yet they are heavy, bulky, and inefficient. The Utopik system, in contrast, functions more like a modern water system connected to an aqueduct with an on-demand pressurization system. It processes power at ultra-high frequencies, delivering clean, stable power exactly when and where it is needed. Automatic voltage rails ensure that Utopik’s output also matches the audio signal itself, providing only the necessary power defined by what is being played and by the listening volume. As a result, less unnecessary power is generated that would otherwise be dissipated as heat.
This translates into several advantages:
- Dramatic reduction of power supply noise that does not release spurious in-band audio;
- Improved energy efficiency;
- More consistent performance regardless of power grid quality;
- Significantly reduced weight compared with traditional designs.

Hybrid Cooling Matrix
One of the aspects that fascinated us most about the Linn Klimax Solo 500 is the thermal management system, which ensures that the amplifier remains at relatively low temperatures. The main components are mounted on a sub chassis consisting of a block of anodized aluminum with high thermal conductivity in turn mounted on a metal plate. This plate is supported in its task by a series of metal ducts designed and optimized with the help of fluid dynamics simulation software, which form a kind of labyrinth of channels sized with absolute precision. This efficient system channels heat upward by carrying it out of the amplifier cabinet through slits carved into the top panel.
However, in the event that the Linn Klimax Solo 500 is pushed to the limit in extended listening sessions, theHybrid Cooling Matrix plays an additional card, switching to active cooling via two internal fans that force cool air between fins located at the top of the heat plate. The system is controlled by an FPGA processor that operates in real time by adjusting the speed of the fans, which is determined by a combination of the amplifier’s internal temperature and the audio signal. This ensures that the fans always operate inaudibly, at the lowest possible speed, while providing ample cooling to maintain ideal performance, efficiency, and without disturbing the listening experience. In practice this means that during a pianissimo the speed will be reduced to a minimum, while during an orchestral fortissimo it will be increased counting on the music to cover any fan noise.

Construction
The aesthetics of these Linn Klimax Solo 500 power amplifiers, even in their utter simplicity, are nothing short of fascinating. The level of finish of the metalwork is stunning and conveys a sense of solidity that, personally, has deeply gratified me. The user interface is delegated to an elegant backlit circular element placed in the center of the front panel and bearing the Linn logo in the center. Depending on the surrounding (power on, power off, standby, fault, etc.) the circular crown of LEDs changes the power sequence or color. The main switch is located immediately below on the bottom panel. At the rear we find the two power cable connectors, which, as expected, accept any type of termination, the IEC power tray, and the two RCA and XLR inputs selectable by a button. Then there is an output (RCA and XLR) that is used to connect multiple units in case you want to build a multi-amplified system like the one we heard in Munich. Interestingly, the amount of machined metal parts from solid that form the chassis has been reduced to the minimum possible, that is, only three pieces: base, rear panel, cover including the front panel and sides. There are also only three internal boards: power supply, amplification and DSP.

Installation
The cabinet of the Linn Klimax Solo 500 is relatively small and compact; where the Klimax Solo 800 typically needs storage outside of a conventional rack, the Solo 500 can easily be placed on a standard electronics rack shelf. The only recommendation is that despite the sophisticated cooling system described above, it still needs some space around and on top. In the video we posted on YouTube you can see the two units placed next to each other on a single shelf. This was done only to simplify filming, but we would not recommend doing so in practical use.

Listening
During the aforementioned interview Mr. Gilad Tiefenbrun had told us that one of the goals his company was aiming at was to flood its user base from those exclusively “Linn Centric” to those using products from different brands. With this in mind, the Linn Klimax Solo 500 power amplifier is designed to be adaptable to whatever preamplifier is placed upstream and whatever load (speaker) may be connected to it. In our case we used the Vivid Audio Kaya 90s and, as source, the Playback Design MPD-8 DAC connected in turn to an Antipodes Audio K30 server/player via USB with a Mad Scientist Black Magic Ultra cable. The analog and power wiring used is from the AudioQuest Mythical Creatures series. The reference amplification with which comparisons were made was my Soulution 511/525 pair.
The first thing that struck me while listening to the Linn was the relatively high temperature at which they work, despite the sophisticated cooling scheme of which I reported earlier. Sonically, the reference can only be the Klimax Solo 800. So the key word is “Grip,” by which I mean the ability to control the dynamics of the sound and especially the low-frequency response. With the Vivid Audio Kaya 90s this meant handling as many as 4 woofers per channel producing powerful bass without ever distorting or losing control, resulting in a dry, punchy and well-defined bass range. All this is never at the expense of harmonic correctness and articulation. As I write this I have in mind a passage (Scherzo) from Bruckner’s Symphony No. 9 (DG) conducted by C. Abbado, where the dynamic contrasts were of stunning impact while preserving every color, every harmonic detail present in the excellent recording. Moving on to other musical territories, I listened to Live in Vienna by K. Jarrett, a recently released 2016 recording. Particularly the closing track Somewhere Over the Rainbow, I was struck by the clarity with which every single note played by the American masterful player was replayed by the system. Sudden attacks, absolutely correct decays, unmistakably Steinway timbre-in short, a real treat for the ears and the soul.
Listening to a couple of Jarrett’s other records, this time as a duo with double bassist Charlie Haden, namely Body and Soul (Verve) and My Old Flame (ECM), revealed a characteristic feature of the Klimax Solo 500 power amps, namely the propensity to make listening engaging and – in some ways – fun and enjoyable. In short, there is not only absolute precision, dynamics, power and control here. No, there is also a lot of listening involvement and enjoyment here. In comparison with the Soulution pair, all things being equal, there is perhaps less overall precision, less detachment from the running track. However, I feel I can write that the Linns are more “empathetic” with respect to the sound material they are called upon to reproduce from time to time. At this level, of course, we are talking nuances, details that only the most experienced, astute and trained listeners are able to grasp. Multiple forays into pop/rock territory have confirmed this feeling of mine: where the Swiss pair seems to approach these genres with a certain reluctance and detachment, the two Klimak Solo 500s seem to enjoy themselves and manage to entertain the heck out of it. But back to the big orchestra, to be precise the Chicago Symphony Orchestra conducted by Riccardo Muti in a recording of G. Verdi’s Messa da Requiem (2009 CSO ReSOUND). Here we were able to listen to the very famous Dies Irae at such high pressure levels that the chorus was believable thanks to the astounding driving ability of the “little” Linn Klimax Solo 500s that with ease pushed the Vivid Kaya 90s to insane levels, yet without any hint of distortion or compression. I conclude these listening notes with the beautiful E penso a te (L. Battisti) in Fiorella Mannoia’s interpretation with piano accompaniment by Danilo Rea from the album Luce. Here the Scottish pair showed off their skills of emotional involvement by making the cantata’s voice vibrant, full and human while Rea’s skillful piano touch, beautifully portrayed, gave the interpretation an aura of magic.

Conclusions
It is true: the Klimax Solo 500 cost much less than their “big brothers” Klimax Solo 800. Nevertheless, it cannot be denied that their cost is – unfortunately – quite high. The fact then that they are so compact and relatively light will probably serve as a cue for their lashing out at all those who evaluate audio products “by the kilo.” Personally, I look at the matter differently, giving due consideration to the design and construction of these amplifiers which are, without a shadow of a doubt, State of the Art. To this I add the emotions that these music machines are capable of dispensing. In conclusion.
