Soulution 787: a revolutionary turntable

Tangency error is the difference between what should be the ideal position of the stylus as it follows the record groove and its actual position. In order to eliminate this error, several manufacturers over the years have come up with reading arms that slide on a more or less sophisticated track that allows its lateral displacement, instead of traveling along an arc of a circle as is the case with traditional type infulcated arms. For its debut in the field of analog sources, which will take place during the upcoming HighEnd 2025 in Munich, the prestigious Swiss brand Soulution, whose review of the Series 3 pre and power amp pair we recently published, has chosen an entirely innovative approach: it is not the arm that moves laterally but the platter.

Ladies and gentlemen, here is the 787 turntable.

In the press release, the company states that due to the side-sliding platter and infulcated arm with minimal excursion and mounted on an isolated resonance-controlled sub-chassis, the tangency error is reduced to a value < 0.15°.

According to Soulution:

“The architecture of the 787 turntable eliminates the friction and unbalanced forces typical of linear tracking (tangential n.d.t.) arms ., where the arm is pulled toward the inner grooves by lateral forces acting on the outer edge of the disc groove. The 787 offers all the advantages of low-friction infilled arms, but without the problems of skating forces, tracking error, and alignment difficulties.”

The moving platter subassembly consists of the platter itself, the subplatter, a high-precision, low-friction sintered magnetic bearing, and the platter drive motor. This assembly slides laterally under the arm on polished metal axles. The 8-inch arm, adjustable for VTA and azimuth, combines the advantages of tangential and pivot arms, thus offering the best of both worlds. Ultra-accurate inductive proximity sensors monitor its position and control the dedicated motor for lateral movement of the platter, ensuring that tracking error always remains less than +/- 0.15°. When the platter moves to its parked position, the arm pivots outward to allow convenient vinyl record replacement.

The announced price for the 787 turntable is CHF 67,500 (inc. VAT 8.1%).
