Davis Acoustics The Pledge

The Pledge is the third acoustic loudspeaker model in the Héritage range from France’s Davis Acoustics and is newly available from the Italian distributor AudioMondo’s sales network. After hearing it at Monaco High End 2025 and Roma High Fidelity, we had the chance to try a pair in our listening room. The Pledge (The Promise) is a floorstanding three-way in a bass reflex configuration with a conventional shape, echoing only some of the stylistic features of the series to which it belongs hyenas.

The Pledge front
The aesthetics of The Pledge are strongly connoted by being based on the contrast between the wooden part and the part painted in matte black.

The most conventional of the Heritage

The Wall and The Stage models are part of the aforementioned Héritage series. In the front view it is evident how their cabinets tend to be flat in appearance, with the width significantly greater than the depth. Indeed, this type of setup became quite popular during the 1970s, partly due to the fact that such a configuration can facilitate installation in certain circumstances, for example by allowing the speaker to be placed closer to the walls. However, both of these speakers are characterized by their large size and aesthetics endowed with a strong personality, by virtue of a neo-vintage style, as defined by the manufacturer.

Davis Acoustics The Stage
The top model in the Heritage series is The Stage. In this case the diagonal "cut" is placed on the front of the speaker that much wider than deep.

The aesthetics of The Pledge loudspeaker, on the contrary, are more soothing by virtue of a conventional vertical development format with a height of about one meter and a plan development of 20.5 cm in width by 30.5 cm in depth. There are three speakers, namely the canonical tweeters, midrange and woofers, where The Stage has two and The Wall has four. The Pledge model thus aims at a kind of ideal compromise. This desire to strike a balance is also found at the image level. The oblique cut constitutes the stylistic feature of the Heritage series. On the two previous models it is found, rather aggressively in my opinion, on the front panel. On The Pledge, on the other hand, it is shifted to the sides, thus in continuity with the chromaticism of the top and front panel, but also with respect to the speaker cover grille, which is made of black fabric. We can thus refer to a cabinet whose upper part is painted in embossed black, while the lower part is covered in either light oak or dark walnut. Before addressing the section on the technique of these speakers, I would like to give some information about the company that makes them.

We found the dark oak version to be more harmonious and aesthetically balanced overall.

Davis Acoustics

Davis Acoustics is a French company specializing in the manufacture of loudspeakers and hi-fi sound systems, founded in 1986 by Michel Visan in Saint Maur-des-Fossés, southern France. Visan had previously worked for a short time at Audax, another celebrated loudspeaker manufacturer, and then at Siare Acoustique in the late 1960s, where he held the position of engineer in charge of development and later technical director for seven years. After Siare was acquired by the Harman Group, Michel Visan decided to establish his own company

Davis Acoustics has built a solid reputation through its handcrafted approach and use of quality materials. the company is particularly known for producing drivers that are used in both its finished speakers and sold separately to DIY enthusiasts.

The company’s philosophy is based on a few key principles: the pursuit of a natural and faithful sound, the use of Kevlar for the speaker cones (a material that offers rigidity and lightness), and manufacturing that combines modern techniques with handwork. Davis speakers typically feature high-quality solid wood or MDF cabinets. The company maintains a relatively small size, preserving direct control over quality and a handcrafted character that distinguishes it from the large industrial manufacturers in the audio industry. The catalog includes several product lines, from the most affordable to high-end series. Audio 2G covered this brand with a review of the Olympia One Master 35 bookshelf and the more affordable Ariane 1.

The Pledge: technique

The ø 20 mm fiberglass and aramid tweeter is a cone-shaped one with stiffening ribs and a central phase-shifting ogive and is coupled with a ø 13 cm midrange, already seen in other achievements of the French manufacturer, which uses the same material. The two drivers work in a load volume independent of that of the woofer that handles the low range. This is a ø 17 cm component with a pulp diaphragm. The load is bass-reflex, with a circular-section tuning tube positioned at the rear above the connection panel for the speaker cables. The speaker is not set up for bi-wiring. The crossovers between the speakers are placed at 400 Hz and 4000 HZ. The crossover is wired in the air, and three different sections, of gradually increasing diameter, of fine cables from HiFi Câble & Cie are used to connect the speakers. The stated sensitivity is 91.5 dB, implying that the power required is relatively low, in fact the manufacturer recommends not exceeding 150 watts on the 4-ohm load constituted by The Pledge. The passband covers frequencies from 40 Hz to 30 kHz. The cabinet is made of thick MDF and weighs a total of 30 kg.

Listening

We listened to Davis Acoustics The Pledge by matching them with different integrated amplifiers: Hi Fi Rose RA 280, Copland CSA 100, Canor Virtus A3, and the more powerful Audio Analogue Maestro 2.0. Four amplifiers representative of as many design types and price ranges. As source we have always kept the Aqua La Scala MKII DAC driven in USB by an Audio PC made with JCat components on which runs the Audiolinux operating system. For cabling, as always, we employed Neutral Cable’s Reference Series.

The first note regarding The Pledge concerns their ability to bring out the characteristics of the different amplifiers that were driving them from time to time. This might seem a trivial aspect, but it actually testifies to the particular sensitivity of these speakers and their ability to very accurately render the signal they are called upon to reproduce. Other speakers, perhaps less coherent timbrally, tend to a more homogeneous and less analytical reproduction thus going to “mask” the sonic characteristics of the reproduction chain that is upstream. The thing I appreciated is that such analyticity, such ability to reveal details, is never at the expense of overall musicality. The most critical interfacing, in my opinion, was with the HiFi Rose RA 280 of which the Davis Acoustics The Pledge highlighted a certain tendency to dry out the sound, which sometimes comes at the expense of naturalness, albeit in a context of extraordinary speed of transient response. Again, however, the result was still enjoyable and exciting. The pairing that pleased us most was the one with the mighty Audio Analogue Maestro 2.0; after all, it was almost a foregone conclusion that this would be the case. The surplus power and exceptional driving ability of the Italian integrated “gave wings” to the French speakers, which were capable of a truly exciting performance with all the musical genres we fed them. In particular, with the various recordings of large symphony orchestras that we passed in review, the sound unfolded materially in the space in front of the listening point, with a truly satisfying sense of perspective and breadth, along with a timbral coherence that allowed us to appreciate each and every section of the orchestra. In some of the operatic passages we were able to appreciate how well these speakers were able to render the voices of the singers, both male and female, with absolute naturalness, restoring to them the body that is often lacking, making them unnatural to listen to.

With other genres, The Pledge was also convincing, particularly the piano reproduction in some jazz trio recordings seemed dense, richly detailed and harmonically coherent, while the rhythm section consisting of double bass and drums seemed sculpted in space and perfectly locked into the right timing.

Even with lineups of only a few elements-the trio above is an example-these speakers were able to recreate a well-sized virtual soundstage on the three axes and always very stable. This surprised me in no small part because these are speakers equipped with a perfectly parallelepiped cabinet, which arouses Immediately some concern regarding possible phenomena Of diffraction on the edges. But evidently, upon listening, such doubts were dispelled.

Conclusions

The €5,490.00 (the pair) charged for these speakers places them in the realm of high-end products aimed at a demanding audience. I think it is fair to say strongly that the level of sonic performance expressed by the Davis Acoustics The Pledge is decidedly high and such as to amply justify their price. From the point of view of matching, they did not seem to us to be particularly demanding speakers, as well as from the point of view of the difficulty of placement in the room. I fear, however, that what may limit their diffusion is the design, certainly not in terms of volume, but because of the unique color choices.

Given the presence of an extensive sales network, I recommend that you go and listen to them if you get the chance.
